Is there a player in the history of Australian cricket who has been more unjustly treated by selecters and supporters alike?

The bloke played a magnificent innings tonight, one which turned the match Australias way. Yet all the talk on this forum is on how good Micheal Hussey was.

He almost singly handedly kept Aus from going out of the champions trophy in straight sets, and dealt Steve Harmison a major psychological blow before the ashes. Good on ya Marto, you are all class!

There wasn't much pressure against England.

Chasing 169, Martyn could afford to bat within himself.

One good innings, especially under those circumstances, doesn't erase the fact he's had a pretty ordinary 2006.

This year, he's made 510 runs at 28.33 from 19 innings. Is that good enough?

Exactly. He's played pretty poorly over the past couple of years. I'd much rather see we blood a few young guys like Cosgrove or Jaques, that way when we do the make the transition and all the older guys get the chop we aren't faced with a relatively young and inexperienced team amd get smashed by Bangladesh.

Oh let me see... Boof, Hodge, Hussey, Siddons, Katich... soon to be Jacques.

If he wasn't Punter's bum chum then he wouldn't be back in the team. There are plenty of batsmen in Australia with his ability and talent, few have been given the latitude he has through bouts of poor form.

I guess this is an advantage to being in a successful team... and regularly rimming the captain.

Most of what you said is blah blah blah.And the guy came through last night, but;

The stats don't lie.If its so hard to get into the Australian team, then why is it also so hard to get out?

A lot

The bloke's never done himself any favours when he was a young punk kid who's more concerned with frequent visits to nightclubs than his actual cricket. If you want favours from selectors you've gotta earn it with good work ethic and behaviour, which was never there when he was a kid.

Off field problems that he frequently caused due to his own actions don't help either

No great surprise that the selectors don't like him, plenty other people don't like him as well

He's wasted a lot of his talents, he is an incredible batsman and should be doing a lot more in both Test and ODI cricket. Another thing that goes against him is that he's been a very ordinary fielder throughout his career

besides last years ashes (when the majority of batsmen struggled) marto has performed brilliantly since he was reinstated into the team after his long exile.

the thing i like about him is that he performs when it counts.

won man of the series IN india, performed unbelievably well against murali IN sri lanka and made a solid 80 odd in the world cup final. lets not forget that

Agreed :thumbsu:

Marto is one of the best bats of all time, he still has some good cricket left in him.

one of the best bats to watch on his day, maybe does not do enough when the team needs him a lot like Mark Waugh.

his record in both test cricket and one day is exceptional and i wouldn't mind seeing him getting a shot in the ashes to prove himself. But still a crucial player for the one day side.

Martyn was a brilliant fielder in the early and middle stages of his career. It's only in the last few years he has seemed to struggle a bit.

Absolutely disagree

He improved his fielding as his career's gone on, but it still doesn't hide the fact that he consistently drops absolute sitters and ain't all that quick around the ground.

Martyn used to catch everything that came near him a few years back.

He had one series where he dropped a lot of catches (can't remember which series it was) and hasn't recovered since.
