Demetriou is angry he has been kicked out of the Qantas Chairmans Lounge .
Next time he does a deal re players safety etc he should consult the Clubs and the players association .

" The AFL confirmed today boss Andrew Demetriou would no longer be entitled to use Qantas' Chairman's Longue after rumours surfaced he had been denied entry earlier this week.
It is believed Demetriou argued with a female worker before an executive told him they could not help. "

The VB deal must be scrapped and the Qantas deal reinstated ASAP

I'm a Demetriou fan (one of only few it seems:p) however, what did he expect tp happen when he signed a deal with a rival company?

I wonder how the AFL will fell once we secure the World Cup on Friday. They may want to sign a deal to take the game elsewhere as there will be no "exclusivity". :D

Wasn't this part of the strategy of the World Cup bid.?

Qantas are soccer's No 1 sponsor.

probably not .
Qantas has far superior planes than VB for the AFL players.
I am so surprised the AFL has placed the players safety , rehab etc at risk.
The clubs and the players association were not even included in discussions re VB.
The world cup has many sponsors .
Qantas supports many sports and the AFL was just one of many involved with Qantas and the AFL didnt like that .

This is a real bug bear of yours, isn't it strategy, do you work for Qantas or something?

who's to say that VB isn't as safe as Qantas?

I have NOTHING to do with Qantas .
I am for the players safety and welfare which the AFL didnt consider re the VB deal .
Read all posts linking what i have stated and you will see the clubs and the players association feel the same way as me re the VB deal .

I believe the executive of Qantas told him that Virgin have a lounge somewhere in the Airport. I just wish I was there at the time.

What did he expect, he only got the benefit because he was head of a large corporate customer.

What sort of absolute rubbish is this?
How, in practical terms, are players going to be less safe on one plane or another plane? Neither QANTAS or Virgin construct the planes, and their pilots and air crew get similat training, so how is it possible for an AFL player to be more or less safe depending on the sign painted on the tail of the plane?
If you want to argue cost, or flying schedules, that mioght be a different matter - but safety????

Ease up Turbo, By saying it is less safe, I believe his point was that the Virgin planes don't have as much room, therefore there is an increased risk to players saftey as many require extra room on the flights when they are injured, or larger in size (Rucks and KPP).

The fact that players regularly were upgraded to business class by QANTAS at no extra cost helped the recovery process hugely, particularly for the WA teams who as we know fly every week.

Perhaps the Poster just used the wrong term, it should have been "well being" instead of "safety". but either, chill out

Suck shit Demetriou you tosser.

Got what you ****ing well deserve for shafting players safety in a bid for exclusivity.

****ing muppet

Huh ??.......have you seen Qantas's record lately ? I'd fly Virgin any day over that backyard shambles of a mob.

wrt long haul flights which I agree are pretty important to the players I wouldn't jump the gun just yet re VB (although I don't doubt that Vlad has perhaps made this decision for the wrong reasons).

VBs premium economy class has not worked and will be replaced by a genuine business class product - VB's strategy (from what I've read on airliners.net lol) is to be a direct competitor to Qantas. The biggest problem atm for VB is that their fleet even for long haul is made up of 737 variants whilst Qantas still have the 767 option which besides being a wider cabin and twin isle obviously has capacity for a larger J section so the odds of an upgrade are bigger although the 767 is getting long in the tooth.

VB has stated that they will lease 2 a332s next year and have another 4 a332s on order. The a330-200 is a far superior aircraft to the 767 for comfort and technology, has a similar seating plan and is held in high regard world wide. The 767 is getting on and afaik QF & JQ only use a330 variants for international travel so VB will have a superior product for the Perth to east coast trips sooner or later which is where they are designating their future a332s.

If VB wish to consolidate their AFL contracts and extend goodwill I'm sure they will afford similar conveniences to players which Qantas has wrt upgrades - why is there an underlying assumption that they wont?

Note: Qantas will up the anti when the 787s come on board but it will be years before we see any for domestic service.

Qantas has still had 0 loss of lives. The same as VB. Despite the fact it has flown for more than 10 times as long and flies 10 times as many flights per week.

The incidents you talk about happen to airlines all the time. I have been on 3 flights that have required emergency landings. None with Qantas (2 in the US, 1 in Japan).

I don't think you can call Qantas a shambles compared to VB when you look at the awesome job at ticketing VB does.

They don't even do all their own maintenance anyway. Much of it is done by John Holland Aviation Services and SIA. So, what is wrong with Qantas doing the same? Only difference between VB and Qantas, is that with Qantas you don't have a bunch of engineers trying to increase their demand and therefore salaries, giving them a lot of bad press.

I'm not saying Qantas is better than VB, but to call them unsafe is just ridiculous.

I don't think he means relating to plane crashes genius, it is in relation to trying to fit Aaron Sandilands in a VB economy seat. There aren't enough aisle seats for every 190cm+ player teams have!

Phew, thought I would have to deal with soccer fans yapping more than usual once every four years. 90 mins for a 0-0 draw and players using theatrics to try and gain an advantage instead of playing the ****ing game?
No thanks.

Incorrect. I flew on a Qantas A332 on the way to Sydney last week. Always like to get on that flight! Far superior plane.

Flew the 737 on the way back.

On the underlying assumption they won't upgrade players. It is just that right now it is all talk that they are expanding their business class section. Will they have that in place by next year? Or will Naitanui, Cox, Lynch, Kennedy and co have to squeeze in to economy seats??

ah ok, wasn't entirely sure, thanks for clarifying.

I have nfi mate but from what I've read VB are very intent on offering a legitimate competing product to QF and if they are dropping one line of service (premium economy - albiet unprofitable) then you'd think they would want the other one up asap so I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Just had a look at the Qantas sight and did a brief check of some flights from GC to west coast, couldn't find a direct one but only did a couple dummy checks.
