Overall am giving him an 8. Saw a lot of John Anthony as a junior - never thought he would get drafted. Hiney did and I was wrong the kid will be gun.

Shannon Cox - thought he could not play at all last year (early) but has come through huge. Same with O'Brien

Rapt in Thomas and pendles and Egan.

**** will be a star and I think Ben Reid will be too. Not sure about Brown but hoping.

Far better than purveyors of opinion in other places.

This week will be interesting to watch - A good debut by at least one or two out of the three newbies will certainly be another tick in the box for Derek Hine.

He is still a little bit behind in terms of delivery from his draft picks. Although he hasn't picked many duds of the Billy Morrison level, guys like Chris Egan, Sean Rusling and Harry O'Brien have shown ability, but not consistency.

I think Thomas and Pendlebury are the only two he's picked so far that are definitely going to make it as quality AFL footballers. That's not to say that others won't come along, but we're still waiting on a few more to step up and become senior players.

Perhaps the test is in getting guns from further down the draft list and not from the top 10 which is a reasonably easy thing to do nowadays with the draft camp and under age comp. Thomas and Pendlebury both were early picks. Lets see how the others pan out.

For my mind the quality of the recruiter is determined by the second to third round picks. First round picks, particularly top 10 (and definitely top 5) should always make it (excepting bad luck with injuries). How well the 2nd and 3rd round guys go is what gives your list depth. Take a look at the top sides over the recent years and I'm sure you'll see that they all have guys taken in the 2nd and 3rd round being regular contributers and bordering on being star players. So it will be Cox, et al. that will determine how good he's been for my mind.

I have to say I am still unsure about whether taking Dawes in the second round was a good move. Drafting a guy with a knee injury that takes him out for a season makes me think of Billy Morrison who was also highly touted but was picked up with a fairly high pick when he had a serious injury.

wrong morrison never made it because he was crap, not because he had injuries. even when he was fit he never made it out of the williamstown reserves. dawes is a pick for the future and if it pays off then the recruiting staff should be commeded for their long term view. it woudlve been very easy to have gone and gotten a djekurra at that pick but in the end those sought of players are generally low impact short term view types. same with jetta who we also couldve had with one of our first 2.

Jury has to be out on Hine. Should get little credit for getting good players with top 5 picks. Egan may or may not be good enough. Rusling was one I though might show Hine’s value but so far he hasn’t. Some tough breaks with injury though. Not a lot has actually come through as yet but it is probably too early to call.

Just on measuring Hine, the relevant comparison isn’t Judkins. The measure is the better preformed of the other clubs. We wont draft our way to a flag by being better than we were we will get there by being the best in the comp.

Nor is the relevant comparison website opinion purveyors. That’s just agenda driven and childish – as are abusive pms.

Hine should get some ticks for nabbing the most sought after talent in the NSW competition

so far we have beaten freo and the saints to some highly sort after juniors, this is a great tick for our recruiting department as if these blokes are virtual gifts if they are any good, as we get to pick them with our last pick in the draft

Billy Morrison is a private citizen - he doesn't deserve to held up to continual ridicule.

Brad Dick will be a very good player. Mark my words.

Coin Toss, do you think that adding players such as **** and Cox will add that extra speed just as Essendon have. Its made them a much better side, do you think it could have same impact at pieland???? Also does toovey have good burners, what is his pace like??

I agree. I have no doubt he will be a better footballer than Leroy Jetta, for example, who the bombers are raving about at the monemt. His kicking skills are far superior and his tackling and chasing is just as good. The fact that he was picked up some 26 picks later than Jetta is where Hine has done extremely well.

**** is super quick - he will add speed through the midfield. Cox is a balanced footballer and Toovey has got some toe about him, but I wouldn't regard them in the same breath as Brad ****, IMO.

I would imagine you'd be out of breath if you were chasing Dick. Hey wait...

Why dont we wait a few years to see how the plays turn out before rating Derek Hine, this is the problem with Collingwood. Wait until we have stars before giving praise. We are too easy with criticism and praise = No success.

For my mind Hine gets a smiley face :) on his report card because all of the young players gave a good account of themselves. Richards was ordinary, but looked better then previous weeks. Cloke was decent enough, and naturally H Shaw, Pendlebury and Thomas were good. But the other young brigade contributed well. I liked that we didn't rely on Lica, Obree and Burns (although Burns was very good and Obree was okay).

Dick better then Jetta? I don't know on this one, as Jetta had a bit of press in the lead up to the draft and his done well for the Bombers as a first year player so he's got ability. D1ck has shown that h's got potential, but really this question will be answered over a number of years, but D1ck definitely showed he's got plenty of ability last night. I thought the other two played well (naturally anyone that kicks 3 goals plays well). Players coming through the draft these days seem more and more prepared for the big time.

Yeah but was Morrison crap because the injuries robbed him of his ability or did we just draft another dud? (I don't really know much about the guys that don't make the main side as I'm stuck in QLD and don't get much news on the VFL). Either way we stuffed up I guess. I'm happy to be proven wrong about Dawes, and would love to see him become a super star, but drafting players with such injuries is always a major risk. The first two picks of the Pies made sense when I read the reasoning that they gave. I think the two guys they picked up will be solid players for us at worst, and really are potential star players. But with Dawes I'm still not sure.

From all reports Morrison pretty much got lost as a AFL footballer especially in the off-field area. This was disapointing as a big part of the reason we selected him was because of his demeanor.

I know that these are early picks but the selection of Pendlebury and Thomas were particularly inspired ones. Considering the draft was rated as a deep but not particularly full with standout talen (for example Hurn was rated anywhere from pick 2-pick15, Pendlebury from 7-30, Thomas from 2-20).
