Saw Derek last night on The Marn Grook Footy Show on NITV (Ch 180 on Foxtel) last night. He was featured in the Wanders segment which looks at ex AFL indigenous footballers and what they are up to now.

He's still playing footy for Rumbalara Football Club in the Murray Football League as he lives in Shepparton these days. They said he's kicked 28 goals this year and is second in the league.

He has put on a bit of weight, he's not huge, and works for an aboriginal organisation that helps kids with education needs and finding employment.

Said that Port never talked to him at the draft camp or any other time so he was surprised to be drafted by us. We picked him with our 5th and last pick no. 54. He started at Lavington, went to Albury before playing for the Murray Bushrangers U/18 side. He came over with Michael Stevens. His first game for Port was at the "G" against Melbourne, Rd 5, and kicked a goal. His last game for MB U/18 was also at the "G" when they won the flag.

Said it was hard leaving family, was lonely at times, but said Port was a good club and spoke highly of the other indigenous players at the club and how they helped him.

The Wanders segment probably is the best part of the show as they find some intersting ex players to tell their stories.
