.. the AFL were in the box seat in the early 00's when the Lions juggernaut was humming along and they were the pride of Queensland and the Swans were starting to come good and attract big crowds ...

and now... fast forward to 2008 and the dynamics have changed whereby the AFL are playing catch-up to rival codes who have got the jump on them in the Gold Coast and elsewhere.

The strategic vision of football codes is a fascinating topic that will captivate BigFooty until the day BigFooty dies because the dynamics are constantly changing.

[edit]
If it came down to who has more money to throw around, then the AFL would win comfortable. However, whereas the AFL are required to buy a Western Sydney fanbase, Rugby League relies on a century of history and tradition and being entrenched into Western Sydney families way of life for generations. In a battle of money vs passion, I would back the passion the people have for their football team.

However, if on the other hand the AFL wanted to slip in quietly and raise their hand only to say "me too" (please support us as well), I think Western Sydney can comfortably accomodate an AFL team.

The reality is the AFL come charging over the hill with guns and arrows banging on drums and their hairy chest about being the biggest gorrilla in the zoo and at the same time alienating the very people they want to broaden their sporting interests.

the code determined that solidfying its presence on the eastern seaboard was more attainable by instituting competitive and sucessful units, rather than expanding via mediocraty.................the quality vs quantity debate.

the Titans' inaugural season was a successful one on the field............up until the last few weeks............had the club continued the poor performances of the giants/gladiators/seagulls/chargers, im sure the titans would have struggled just as much as its predecessor(s)......notwithstanding that this re-carnation is a real GC team, and not another NSW club based at Tweed Heads.

But i do agree somewhat with your argument that perhaps the AFL have procrastinated somewhat........its a fine balancing act they need to peform.........their goal of expansion into foreign markets is hamstrung by the attempt not to disenchant the heartland by rationalising Melbourne clubs.

well isnt 18 teams leaning towards quanity over quality..?

True, and off-field was an even bigger success.

I think the professionalism and business acumen this time around is like chalk and cheese... then again, the Titans will hope they can be as financial as the Chargers.

Then again, many argued that in the early 00's when AFL was humming along on the back of Lions/Swans success arguably the right strategic priority for AFL in northern outposts was funding grassroots advertising and promotion rather than an elite professional team player salaries and hangers-on support staff costs.

...by creating thread after thread after thread as to the AFL's temerity to expand football to the Gold Coast with a new AFL club, that yes, you are feeling quite insecure and a little threatened.
It's OK, co-existence will work on the Gold Coast.

Isn't that why this thread was created?

that yes, you are feeling quite insecure and a little threatened.
It's the most topical discussion point in AFL and RL, yeah?

It's OK, co-existence will work on the Gold Coast.
Peaceful co-existence can work everywhere, in all markets.

Its not just about the Titans being called 'Lucky'. Thats just the latest example of the AFLs aggressive and arrogant behaviour since the Titans were announced as the 16th NRL team.

As soon as the Titans started, the AFL moved the Kangaroos there and spent all last year basically trying to rain on the Titans' parade. An example that springs to mind was that whole drama about demanding the Titans not use extra temporary seating at Carrara because 'it might damage the ground'.
It probably seemed like a good move from AFL house down in Melbourne, but from the Gold Coast it looked like the first, feelgood year of a GC NRL team was being interrupted and having demands placed on it by a blow-in Melbourne team from a rich, relatively unpopular sport.

Perhaps. Although, I think the AFL's best guide as to how well the code is going up north is to see how Sydney and Brissy go when things aren't so hot on the field. Brisbane struggled big time last year and still did pretty respectably crowd wise. I think the AFL would be confident that the code has a foothold up there. We are yet to see how the Swans will go when they have a downturn in on-field fortunes - the signs are that the fluctuations that occurred in the 80s and 90s will not return, but we can't really tell until they sink down near the bottom.

The AFL has probably been a little cautious in that regard - why would they send another team or two up north if the ones that already exist can't get bums on seats? I think that question might be close to being answered, though. The two current teams are doing quite well.

BF posters dont understand that one set of events plays differently to the public in different areas. BF posters need to understand the concept of polysemic structures.

So tell us how cannibalism fits into polysemic structures, because that is the description that Mr Searle of the Titans gave to the AFL?

The negative impression of Queenslanders to otherwise AFL Chairman tough talk which plays well in the heartland. And Searle is right.. the AFL take the approach of search and conquer and destroy because they are the biggest gorilla in the zoo money-wise and this plays badly in the local media in the regions they wish to enter.

Confidence is contagious. Arrogant people have their critics, but they privately command respect. As for the shy and retiring types, people just kick sand in their face.

Go soft at the ball, you get hurt. Go hard at the ball, you will be fine. Same goes in league. Same in league. Hit it up hard, you will be fine. Lack assertiveness and you will be killed.

dont wsydney and the new tv deal start in 2012,looks like afl is going to use the new tv deal to finance ws ,foxtel would be stupid to kick up the price for fta as they then would have to pay more for the paytv rights interesting times ahead.
