This whole thing has started to become extremely confusing. On reading the ploy where the contract would be voided and the AFL would step in with a free agency compo pick, the first impression I had was that this was something that had been cooked up by the AFL. Now I find that the two teams were making up a hypothetical and expecting that the AFL would go along with it. At least Essendon have got their hooks out of Hartlett. A couple of players from other teams have been linked with their club so if we can help along the way, we could still get Ryder with a minimum of angst.

Nah, I'm sure Ryder agrees that it's DFA from here on out. Essendon deserves nothing. No pick 17, no pick 35. Keep 17 for McKenzie.

If it means we go into 2015 with Gorringe and Lobbe, so be it.

I am pretty sure the 1st situation is correct. Essendon were expecting pick 13, but were told they would get 21. Whether or not the AFL actually said yes to the deal is unclear, but they definitely did not say no until this morning and were giving the impression that it was possible. I am indifferent, but by allowing both parties to think they would get a good deal for 24 hours and then scuppering the trade, they have pretty much guaranteed this ends up I court, which I thought they wanted to avoid.

The whole thing confuses me it'd be great if we could just get Ryder for nothing & keep pick 17 though lol, one thing is for sure this deal has to be done by Sunday right? Might be a few trades getting done in the next few days once the ball is rolling.

To stay confused, but get a deal like that, you have to talk to the tax partners at the accounting and law firms that News Corp uses. They find highly technical loopholes in the system, but instead of New Corp paying 30 cents in the dollar in tax they pay about 1.5 cents - or less.

According to my friendly post office friends who are good friends with Ryders uncle, its 100% Port Adelaide or nothing

According to uncle, If he cant make his way to Port this season he will quit Essendon and go play in the WA country league for 12 months then join Port as a DFA

post office friends, friends with ryders uncle. sounds legit :)

Doesn't ryder have 2 years left on his current contract? e.g. it wouldn't just be 12 months

That is correct and he will sit out those 2 years if necessary.

Yes - plus one of Grimley or Lowden please!

Probably prefer Grimley - don't know much about him bar the promising raw numbers and claimed inconsistency - the implied knock on his mental strength when things aren't going well for him - but he seems more the big forward who can ruck where Ryder (proven) and Gorringe (potential) are more rucks who have a higher capacity to impact up forward than Lobbe or Redden have so far.

If he sat out for 2 years why would we or anyone else want him though? That is a huge risk for him, and we can't really keep a slot open for him for 2 years.

why would he want to? i dunno i think i could handle sitting on my ass with a young family for 2 years while getting nicely paid lol

he wouldn't be getting paid by Essendon if he was refusing to play for them. And I can't see why we would be paying him for sitting on his bum for 2 years.

Likey Likey Likey the bold bit.

having said this, the 2 year thing would never happen. He could pull the old retire for a year and then come back trick ala Clark, Cornes, Brogan, Hudson. The AFL just would not let Paddy get screwed out of the deal. I would expect something like 'I hope your are looking forward to 11 Sunday night home games Essendon' if you don't play ball.

Interesting on trade radio, said that AFL Players association believes if Ryder went to grievance tribunal he would be successful.

and then Essendon would **** block us by appealing the decision and we wouldn't know for a few months so we would effectively have to take a gamble.

They can appeal all they want but in the meantime Ryder is at Port.

Cause their record in the courts is so impressive ;) How is it a gamble for us? go to tribunal, sign ryder and wouldn't he be at port until the bombers lose their case?

Is anyone else thinking that this has gone beyond bullshit? Is it really worth going to this much trouble for a player?

In my honest opinion the sooner we get away from dealing with Essendope the better, with or without Ryder.
