Dylan Buckley - 2011 Father-Son selection

Like father, like son for Dylan Buckley
Carlton's commitment means Buckley's TAC Cup experience will be different to that of his peers.

"They said I'll still be playing for Ivanhoe Grammar, which is my school and my first commitment, then secondly at Northern Knights when I can," he said.

"When I'm on holidays I can train (at Carlton) and next year hopefully I'll do a bit of a preseason with them and use their facilities."

"I'm playing a lot of back line and trying to get that down pat," he said. "I've mostly been playing midfield and down forward, so the opportunity to play in the back line at the moment is something I really want to work on."

The Bombers can trump that by committing to Daniher, the younger brother of Darcy, early next year, as Carlton recently did with Dylan Buckley, but the AFL confirmed yesterday that they would then have to wait until he reached draft age, in 2012, to access him.

Carlton has already declared it will select classy midfielder Buckley - the son of former great Jimmy, who Team GWS was keen to list as one of the 12 17-year-olds it can sign this year - as a father-son pick in next year's draft.

Son of a gun Dylan Buckley keen to fire

"A lot of my good mates have been offered contracts up at Western Sydney, but I always thought if I did play AFL, the only place I would play would be at Carlton," he said yesterday.

"Then the new team came in with the new rules, but I'm just happy Carlton have made the commitment and I have agreed to it.

"I spoke with Steven Icke and Stephen Kernahan from Carlton. It went through them and they approached my dad," the younger Buckley said.

"They said, 'This is what we offer' and we said, 'That's fine' and after a handshake it was done. (Kernahan) is one of the blokes I always looked up to.

"He used to live with Mum and Dad. He is definitely one of my heroes at Carlton. It is great to have that approval from him."

Since Dylan turns 18 before April 30, I believe he would have been draftable two years ago.

They raised the draft age to 18 and ruled out bottom age picks.

Scary given his lack of size.

With the imminent departure of Judas, the number 16 is set to be free for the prodigal son :):thumbsu:

Hope he does it proud.

Re: Dylan Buckley - 2011 Father-Son selection

Just read that the Dee's are trying to get the AFL to allow their future F/S prospect, Todd Viney to play for their VFL affiliate during his draft year. Wonder if we could see Buckley in the Bullants next year? Probably too skinny...

Re: Dylan Buckley - 2011 Father-Son selection

Terrible idea. Leave him play with his mates at the Knights.....his body is far less developed than David Swallow....especially with his recent shoulder injury I'm not sure you'd want to fast track him playing against men

The Blues are keeping an eye on the progress of Dylan Buckley, son of premiership player Jimmy, who is recovering from a shoulder operation.

The Blues have already committed to taking the talented 17-year-old who will play TAC Cup this year as a father-son signing in 2011.

"Dylan won't train with the main group, but he will work closely with our fitness and conditioning staff," Icke said.

Re: Dylan Buckley - 2011 Father-Son selection

Was driving down lower Heidelberg Rd yesterday at about 4:15 when i was slowing down to stop behind a few cars who were stopped at a red light and who should walk out in front of me. Dylan Buckley. I could of hit the little guy. Also gave me a dirty look for it even though he was J walking. Was pretty funny.

I should have yelled out that your Carlton now and don't risk getting hit by a car. He is also really small. Let's hope he grows and fills out a bit.

Re: Dylan Buckley - 2011 Father-Son selection

just a random stupid idea...but do tac cup players get tested for drugs? knowing that we will pick him up next year, i think the club should consider pumping the roids into him so that he has an afl ready body come 2012, and then half the job is done! if they do get tested, i think that he hould just play for his local club, whoever they might be!

Maybe you should lay off the drugs yourself, Matt :p

I'm normally very good at picking out sarcasm/joke vs idiocy... but i'm not quite sure in this instance..

So much for chip off the old block. Jimmy would have punched your windscreen in. Still, a dirty look is a nice start.

Re: Dylan Buckley - 2011 Father-Son selection

We don't want his balls to shrink - akin to a few player performances in the Navy Blue this year unfortunately

*Please note - The Carlton Football Club had offered to keep the number 16 guernsey on hold in anticipation of drafting Dylan Buckley, however Dylan advised the Club that he wished to forge his own history with Carlton and requested that another number be allocated to him.

Here's hoping that young Dylan can make the Buckley name famous at Carlton with 2 different numbers. Got to admire a young man that wants to step out of the shadow of his famous father and make his own name in the AFL.

Re: Dylan Buckley - 2011 Father-Son selection

Another speedy midfielder will fit in very nicely with our developing inside mids in Robbo, Curnow and Cachia. ;)
