Eddie McGuire's response to Swan interview

Just listened to Eddie's response on Triple M this morning. Here are the things I learned:

  • Eddie was happy for Swan to do an interview on TFS
  • He encourages all players to be available to the media in all forms, radio, tv & newspapers
  • He clearly has a healthy dislike for Damien Barrett
  • He ultimately blames Liam Pickering (Swanny's manager) for not advising the club's media department about Swanny's interview, but Swan must wear some of the blame also.
  • He firmly believes he isn't a hypocrite when asked what's the difference with the way he went about the Liam Jarrah interview. He states Jarrah wasn't paid for the interview and Eddie didn't approach him, the Jarrah family invited him into their home to tell their story.
  • He made a strong point about the AFL cracking down on players going outside the boundaries and prototcols of media interviews, mentioning much heavier financial sanctions and the AFLPA getting involved.
  • Swanny is going beautifully and has ticked every box the club put in place for the preseason.
  • Eddie categorically stated there is no rift between Bucks and Swanny. They get along famously and have a great professional relationship.
  • He absolutely loved the question Drew Petrie asked Barrett about why he didn't go through the proper channels of Pies media department and thought Barrett's response was rubbish.
  • He has no issue with TFS paying for interviews, just the sanctimonious BS that went on afterwards with Barrett and Lyon sitting down talking.
  • He called out Barrett saying he didn't try to contact him until an hour before TFS was to go to air.
  • He also made a point of saying he is the most contactable person going around, having two PA's and working at many different organisations.
  • He confirmed Swanny was fined 5K and would've fined him 25K if hea was allowed to do so.
That's about it and most of the points I can recall. I'm sure there is possibly more but it pretty much covers it. My take is there's no bad blood between Swanny and the club that will come out of this. Liam Pickering probably deserves the fine more than Swan does.
I'm also certian that Barrett will be blacklisted with the club for foreseeable future.

Barrett is just looking for a story and didnt get one..I don't see the point of the interview. If the media department have to be notified and weren't then I understand why the club isn't happy about that..any collingwood player would be fined for that..not just swannie.im sick and tired of them trying to make out swannie hates the club,he made it clear he will be a one club player and he is greatful for collingwood sticking by him in times of trouble and want to repay them with good footy.

Barrett can't hassle cloke anymore so he moves on to swannie.leave the man alone Barrett you rat

My favorite part of the interview is when Drew Petrie made barrett squirm

Drew Petrie = top bloke :thumbsu:
Got to agree, because it was the exact same question I was asking myself.

Thought Swanny's interview was top notch too, just a shame it wasn't through the correct channels.

Eddie's a class act.

We can all whinge about Barrett but lets face it, a huge story has been concocted out of absolutely F all, a media dream, so he must be doing something right.

It's getting worse.
This was to be the story that everyone would be talking about on Friday and if it wasn't for Collingwood fining Swan, no one at all would have been talking about it at all.

Ordinary stuff from Barrett and TFS, in desperate need of publicity.

Disappointed that Collingwood pulled Ball off the show in protest. Not really sure why they did that.

Yeah, pretty obvious Eddie spat the dummy about it and that was in retaliation. The interview was an absolute non issue, and even if Pickering and Swan did wrong by not going through the proper channels I fail to see whats gained by blowing it up even further. I think in this case the admin sitting down with Swanny and telling him he mucked up[ and that next time he'd face penalties would've been appropriate. I feel like this was handled poorly.

That's right, we all now know the footy show is back on now don't we? Well done by Barrett, everyone is talking about an interview where nothing happened.

I'm not. They need us more than we need them, to make the understatement of the - what's above millennium? They will think twice before trying to slink by.

Why did Swan go outside club rules to do the interview? Only he can answer this. If he thinks the club didn't defend him when Caroline Wilson ran the story last year, what part of the story was he unhappy about? Did he tell the club that at the time? Seems to me if Dane Swan wants to earn the big bucks as a AFL player, then he needs to learn that it is a team game, he is employed and paid by the club to do nothing else but abide by the team rules and conduct himself professionally on and off the field. One more stunt like this and I reckon the club will get tired of this sort of crap by individuals. If you earn big money, play by the rules that give you that money.

Guys the club had to fine Swanny, everyone must be accountable to the same set of rules and conditions or we get back the the MM way of doing things with tiered favourites.

Who cares if TFS runs with it? Anyone who gives any credence to their crap is unlikely to be a reasonable person so F#(%K them.

Swanny went outside the rules and got fined for it as any other player would be, our procedures have clearly been followed and, internally at least this issue will be put to bed.

So Dane told Eddie about the interview with the Footy Show and Eddie was okay with it.

However, he gets a fine because he didn't specifically tell the media department.

Seems pretty poor form.

The interview itself was such a non-event.

Dane's manager should also bear some responsibility for not officially telling the club.

Beat up. It's a freakin interview that Swannie wanted to do. So the club pays him. Big deal! If any one of us wasn't allowed to do an interview through our employers we'd be up in arms. I'm glad he did the interview as he obviously wanted to, and I hope he made some sweet profit even after the clubs ridiculous fine. Swannie is a legend. If he had have said anything that hurt the club, punish him for that. Fact is he didn't.

Well when you join a Club, that is something you sign up to. If you don't like it then why come a AFL player?

Great Question and the Ambulance Chaser Barrett came up with a Weak Excuse
