His reaction says it all. Anyone who made a genuine mistake like that would apologise and make it clear they abhor Nazism, especially because of how such behaviour emboldens card carrying Nazis. But instead he just deflected because the gaslighting is the point. It's postmodern fascism 101.

In addition to signalling to the far right, Elon’s salute also serves to wrong-foot democrats. He added “my heart goes out to you” as a description of his gesture, but he knows what it was, and he knows that they know what it was. But because he has conditioned it the way he did, the right gets to claim “oh look, they lost an election so they’re just calling everyone Nazis again”.

it's not a good one though. i use apple products and their capture, edit, and hosting process is a pain in the arse which is why i rarely use it.

Some of their critics have already been broken to an extent, such as Cenk Uygur, Joe Scarbarough, etc who have outright said they want to extend olive branches to either Trump or his supporters.
They are counting on that. They are counting on spamming the country with drama like all narcissists with their victims with endless shit tests, and hoping their exhausted victims simply fall in line.
Hopefully enough in the media and the citizens hold the line and not let their narratives go unchallened in the public square. I can already see the late night hosts like John Stewart and Steven Colbert aren't going to back down. I bet Trump and co wouldn't mind what befell of Stephen Fry's character in V for Vendetta when making fun of the dear leader to happen to them, but he's in for a shock.

It doesn't matter how minimally or dramatically anyone points it out or engages with it... once it's been engaged with it's fishfood for the social media foaming... "Libtards call everything they don't like Nazism", "Just one heartfelt gesture and they're already losing their minds", "Look at all these other Nazis from the other side of politics."
The gesture whether deliberate, accidental, for the LOLs, as a dog-whistle to neonazis, or for any other reason... it still feeds that swarm. Everything feeds that swarm. Even accepting social media can be biased both ways, in a battle between controversy and shit-stirring against pragmatism and thoughtfulness, it will only ever slant one way.

My first option would be to just through all social media in the bin. Or at least... take it all off phones. I still want to be able to log onto BigFooty on my laptop I just don't like everyone using TikTok on their phones all day.
Or... old person fuddy-duddiness aside... this problem only goes away if and when we turn a corner and make thoughtfulness, creativity, and generally more positive vibes the winner for social media algorithms. So the starting point would be if we had people running those platforms believing in those things, which we can't even get so it's a long way from changing.
So... I don't know... fight fire with fire and start being outright vicious and ignorantly stupid when pushing anti-fascist ideology online?
