Just some articles tracking Deluca throughout 2008 - this post will be regularly updated.

Big names back for Swans clash - 21 Feb 08
...
Veterans Warren Tredrea and Dean Brogan, who both played a half last week, will watch from the sidelines, meaning Fabian Deluca will lead the ruck for the first time.

Deluca received high praise for his career-best game last week and will be supported in the ruck by Jon Giles. Young big man Hugh Minson has also been named in the 28-man-squad, which will be trimmed to 26 later in the week...

Deluca big talent, says Pearce - 03 Mar 08
PORT Adelaide's Danyle Pearce has tipped a big season for emerging ruckman Fabian Deluca, saying he could be the third genuine ruckman the Power has been searching for. Pearce – the 2006 AFL Rising Star winner – roved to Deluca in the 35-point win against Collingwood at Princes Park on Saturday and he liked what he saw.

"Deluca's been fantastic," Pearce said.

"He's done what the coaches have asked and I'm sure he's got a lot of confidence out of the way he has played (in the pre-season) because he's shown that he can get in there and perform against the best in the competition.

"He's been getting his hands on the ball first, he's been a good physical presence and has really put the ball out in front where the (midfield) boys want it."

Pearce said Deluca was displaying all the attributes of a class AFL ruckman and could provide valuable support to mainstays Brendon Lade and Dean Brogan this season.

The 203cm giant is a chance to play in the Power's premiership season opener against premier Geelong, with Brogan sidelined with an abdominal strain.

Port junior ruckmen catching up: Lade - 05 Mar 08
Port Adelaide's senior ruckman Brendon Lade predicts tyros Fabian Deluca and Jon Giles may yet be good enough to tip him or Dean Brogan out of the preferred Power 22 this AFL season.

In what was either a significant vote of confidence or simply a case of idle pre-season talk, Lade said the younger duo had done enough over the summer to suggest they were closing the gap on what is arguably the league's finest ruck combination....

Re: #37 Fabian Deluca

Been impressed with Deluca so far this preseason. Seems to have added a lot to his game.

We'll need him to perform on a regular basis this season I reckon as Lade and Brogan are both on the wrong side of 25 and appear to be somewhat injury prone now.

Re: #37 Fabian Deluca

At this stage of the season it would be fair to say that Fabian has done pretty much everything that was hoped for and that he has probably surprised a few people in fact with how well he's come on, and that includes me.

Being such a big bloke he was always going to take a while to mature but it seems now that he has put on enough muscle to have improved mobility to match his impressive height.

He has certainly put himself forward as third in line in our ruck battery by a clear margin and looks like he will be able to perform well enough now to provide some decent back up should either Lade or Brogan get injured.

The main improvement in his game that's been commented on are his second efforts and there are also signs that he can take some important marks in the defensive area.

Here's a couple of pics of Fabian rucking against Carlton in the NAB cup game

Re: #37 Fabian Deluca

From these pictures it looks like he has NO protection of his body, He really should work on getting his leading knee up for a bit of protection! I watched the 2004 Grand Final last night, the old ruck rules were far better than the crap we play with now, seeing Brogan run straight through Keating at that first ball up just set the tone, Don't bother about that Hardwick stuff before the game, Brogans hit was big and all the players stood taller after that moment! Also Josh Carr... How good was he! the replay of that 04 flag just makes me miss him more! I hope one day, he will come back, I would like to see him as an assistant coach for us or something of the sort!

Re: #37 Fabian Deluca

Deluca has so far had a terrific pre-season and has done all that has been asked of him. He has a bigger body this year and is now positioning himself in better areas around the ground, specifically in defence where he took some impressive marks against collingwood.

Due to his successfull pre-season there is now talk of him being played as a third ruck in Port's starting 22 - a structure that failed in 2005, but may be worth trailling in 2008.

In terms of DT his pre-season indicates he'll get some game time. For his price which i think is around $92K - i'd expect him to earn plenty of cash on the bench. I don't think any other rucks at that price are as close to getting a game as Deluca is atm.

Re: #37 Fabian Deluca

Dropped to the reserves for round 7 of the SANFL, but it didn't stop him from getting the coffee...

http://portadelaidefc.com.au/tabid/6038/default.aspx?newsid=59489
Big man Fabian Deluca has won the Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week award for Round 7 after dominating the ruck for the Sturt reserves.

Despite some good performances, Deluca was dropped to the reserves last week, but according to the Sturt coaching staff, his attitude and work-rate was fantastic and he was rewarded with around 50 hit-outs in the ruck.

Nick Salter was awarded Play of the Week for a long bomb against the Bulldogs.

The award is judged by the Power development coaches and is announced exclusively at PortAdelaideFC.com.au each Monday.

The club’s development manager Daniel Healy and development coach Darren Trevena take us through all the action from a good round of SANFL for Power players:

Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week
Fabian Deluca (for Sturt reserves v West reserves at Unley) – Unfortunately Fabian was dropped to the reserves this week, but went back with a terrific attitude and Sturt made a comment about how impressed they were with his attitude, so that was pleasing. He had around 50 hit-outs, kicked two goals and had a few possessions....

With that performance, i expect fabian will be back in the league team quick smart.

Re: #37 Fabian Deluca

Deluca wins the coffee for the third time this year! And this time it's in the league team!

Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week
Fabian Deluca (for Sturt v Port at Alberton) – Pick of the week. A really hard-running performance from Fab and got the better of Meiklejohn, who is one the better ruckmen in the SANFL. He won 22 hitouts and had 6 kicks, 7 marks and 7 handballs. He also played up forward and presented well, kicking 1.1. Brought his solid AFL form back to the SANFL. More

He seems a bit better for the AFL experience. At least he is showing some improvement. Hopefully he can continue this improvement and translate it into AFL success.
