More info on Fabian Francis
Football took this talented Aboriginal player all over South Australia after he initially started with Southern Districts in the Northern Territory.
Fast and talented as a winger, he had one game with Melbourne in 1991 and after that went to Brisbane before returning to Port Adelaide in the SANFL. He settled at Port where he ran second in the Magarey Medal in 1996 and then became a regular in the Power's first AFL side.
He was a fine player for Port with his strong runs from defence usually capped off by a thumping kick downfield.
Third in the Power best and fairest in 2000 he was surprisingly delisted at the end of 2001 and then became the centre of a huge controversy when Fremantle wanted to nominate him as the number one selection in the 2002 PSD, but was ruled ineligible when the AFL declared that the Dockers had no room in their salary cap.
During the 2002 season, Francis suffered a serious knee injury playing for South Fremantle. He was not drafted by Fremantle later in the year, and a cash settlement was agreed upon in lieu of drafting him.
Fabian played for the Port Magpies in 2004-05 after spending the 2003 season at South Adelaide.
