More info on Fabian Francis

Football took this talented Aboriginal player all over South Australia after he initially started with Southern Districts in the Northern Territory.

Fast and talented as a winger, he had one game with Melbourne in 1991 and after that went to Brisbane before returning to Port Adelaide in the SANFL. He settled at Port where he ran second in the Magarey Medal in 1996 and then became a regular in the Power's first AFL side.

He was a fine player for Port with his strong runs from defence usually capped off by a thumping kick downfield.

Third in the Power best and fairest in 2000 he was surprisingly delisted at the end of 2001 and then became the centre of a huge controversy when Fremantle wanted to nominate him as the number one selection in the 2002 PSD, but was ruled ineligible when the AFL declared that the Dockers had no room in their salary cap.

During the 2002 season, Francis suffered a serious knee injury playing for South Fremantle. He was not drafted by Fremantle later in the year, and a cash settlement was agreed upon in lieu of drafting him.

Fabian played for the Port Magpies in 2004-05 after spending the 2003 season at South Adelaide.

Ex-Port Adelaide AFL star Fabian Francis faces abuse charges
ANDREW DOWDELL, COURT REPORTER
January 08, 2009 01:50pm

FORMER AFL star Fabian Francis has appeared in an Adelaide court to face domestic violence charges spanning more than a decade.

Francis, 35, faces a total of 50 charges - most allegedly committed against his former wife between 1998 and February last year.

Francis played 109 AFL matches for Port Adelaide, Melbourne and the Brisbane Bears between 1991 and 2001 before a knee injury ruined his career in 2002.

Among the litany of charges facing Francis are 28 counts of assault against his ex-wife, former policewoman Debra Buckskin.

The couple married in 1999 and Francis told media at the time that "she put me on the straight and narrow and helped me a lot."

Francis also faces seven counts of threatening to kill Ms Buckskin over a number of years.

Many of the offences were allegedly committed while Francis was a key member of Port Adelaide's original AFL squad.

Francis also played a season for Port Adelaide's SANFL team and was runner-up in the 1996 Margarey Medal.

Court documents reveal that one of the alleged assaults happened at Ms Buckskin's Greenwith home on Christmas Day 2007.

The most recent charges relate to an incident in February last year, in which Francis allegedly threatened to kill Ms Buckskin and damaged the front security door of her home.

The next day he was charged with breaching a domestic violence restraining order imposed at Holden Hill Magistrates Court in June 2005.

Francis, of Seaford, was granted police bail after the latest alleged incident.

Prosecutor Karen Parouchais today handed over a bundle of police and witness statements and asked for a six-week adjournment to allow further documents to be provided.

Francis made no comment as he walked from the court with his lawyer Brett Dixon and is excused from attending the next hearing in February.

Buckskin, 36, is herself listed to face trial in the District Court later this month over an alleged racket in which police information was passed onto an outlaw motorcycle gang.

Buckskin, of Greenwith, was arrested in October 2006 and was suspended from her job as a patrol officer at Tea Tree Gully police station.

Ex-Port Adelaide player Francis, 35, appeared in Adelaide's Holden Hill Magistrates' Court yesterday on a total of 50 domestic violence charges spanning a decade between 1998 and February last year.

They include 28 of assault against his ex-wife, suspended policewoman Debra Lee Buckskin.

Ms Buckskin faces serious unrelated charges over her alleged involvement in a scheme to pass confidential police information to members of an outlaw motorcycle gang.
