Coach Fages and the coaching group

Agree on McCluggage, I mentioned it to our group watching today he looked like he was gassed inside 15mins. His pressure and tackle efforts looked fatigued, even early in the game.
He always looks like ,that but he keeps going .

My slight on McCluggage is that for a guy that's 185cm and 25 years old, he still seems pretty light framed. I think that will stop him ever being an inside-out mid, however he CAN play as either an inside or an outside mid.

IMO he's clearly better on the outside as shown by some of his top shelf kicks inside 50 this finals season. Him and Coleman raffling it for vision / kicking ability.

Daly was asked in the pre-season just gone if we would make many changes to the coaching set up last offseason. From memory he said ‘no, most assistants were contracted to the end of next (this) year and there would be some decisions made then’.

I have been calling for a stronger coaching panel for years. Fagan has done exceptionally well with this group, but when was the last time one of our assistants have been in discussions for a senior role? We consistently get outcoached and I think, with bigger focus and investment on high level support for fages, he would have a cup in the cabinet by now.

I know some people would say ‘this coaching group was 1 kick away from a premiership etc etc’ but Unfortunately, we didn’t win it and we haven’t won it with chances over the last 5 years. I think it was plain to see the Pies were far more drilled than us in key areas and they dominated the coaching battle. Their coaches made more of less talent.

Take a look around the league at the strength of some teams coaching line ups, I think we desperately need to bring in a senior assistant and or someone else with high level footy credentials.

It’s time for some great ideas and intel around fages, would be attractive too for an assistant with senior ambitions, to be the one that comes in and tips us over the top. Ratten would have been great, Mini would be the sort of bloke I’d be chasing too.

Hopefully this is year.

Just announced on Trade Radio that Jed is moving on to the Roos, so that’ll be one spot to fill in the coaching group.
Oh no hope his house doesn’t become a rental again. The last tenants were idiots

Could be really good for him to go work under Clarkson. I don’t have strong opinions on assistant coaches usually as I’m not sure how you really judge them but I have to admit Adcock was never my favourite player so have kind of wished for a change there

McQualter is off to the Dees.

Dew would be ok I think.

Latest word was that Dew was keen to remain in QLD, so that could be a chance.

Reckon he'd be a massive acquisition if he was up for it.

Dodongo is not sure what Shannon Hurn wants to do but if he wants to get into coaching he would be the perfect replacement for Adock

Are we consistently getting out coached? This is a pretty big call for a team that generally had games won in the 3rd quarter.

Unless you're in the know with assistant coaches, I think it's impossible to make statements of us needing high level footy credentials...do none of our assistants have this?

No. If we were consistently outcoached we would not be playing finals...it's that simple. People making posts like that should give Big Footy a rest for a few weeks to calm their emotions rather than coming out with disrespectful comments like that.

We just need something or someone to help us win at the MCG, may be some temporary coaching smarts to retinker our game plan just for that ground, we just can’t defend there, how we conceded so many more scoring shots in a GF to a team that barely crossed 50-60 points all finals series is madness.

We just don’t defend that ground very well do we.

I’m at the point where I wouldn’t be against Sharp playing the games at the MCG regardless of ressies form, with the sole purpose of running with the oppositions wingers and to get back and help our defence. Don’t care if you don’t touch the ball Harry, but if you can help us defend the ground better, then you’re in.

The likes of Jaicos, Langdon etc are making a living running up and down that wing.

our list is in peak condition for a premiership chase and I reckon anyone of the AFL coaches would have got us to finals this year.

My biggest problem with the coaching is the system falls apart too easily if we are outplayed on the inside. No plan b besides down the wings or hack kicks. That’s a coaching issue.

Amazing how some see the players as blameless or sheer fluke and out everything on the coaches

I think Fages just needs to accept that there is an issue with us playing that ground and try to address it with something like you said, I remember in a press conference earlier in the season he deflected the issue and pulled out some random comparison to NBL but the bottom line is if we can’t win at MCG, we can’t win a premiership!

I would be chasing Don Pyke very hard. Since he arrived at the Swans they have completely changed the way they have played and make much better use of their talent now than they had done for many years under Horse.

Cox has been anointed as the heir apparent and there could be a chance to poach Pyke.

Of our other assistant coaches I would punt Hudson who I don't think did a great job in the reserves and Bruce who I have never really rated and hopefully he was only signed for two years.

Lot of talk that Pyke will be West Coast's next CEO.

Reminder that the Gabba is only 3 metres narrower and 5 metres shorter than the MCG.
That’s true. It certainly feels like a bigger ground though watching games there compared to the Gabba for example. Presumably, because it’s such a huge stadium.

So whilst it may not be that much bigger in regards to the actual size of the ground, subconsciously it may seem that way, even more so out in the middle.
