I was just idly thinking about the athleticism and speed of TDK, and then separately about how quick Billy Wilson is, and that got me to thinking about the fastest Carlton players I've ever seen, then the fastest Carlton players ever and from that to trying to put together a fastest Carlton All-Time 23.

I decided to make a 100 game minimum to ensure that only genuine league quality players were counted not couple of game speed freaks with a limited football CV - allowing an exception for TDK himself who hasn't made that mark yet. Obviously that ruled Billy Wilson out but c'est la vie.

Now naturally to pick just the fastest players you would end up with a heap of smalls and third talls, but I wanted a workable team, so I decided to include 2 rucks (with the speed requirement I decided the team could handle 2 rucks) , 2 2nd/3rd tall types forward and 1 key defender and 2 2nd/3rd tall backs. The bench is stacked with mids naturally enough.

Some of the players may not be a fast as others I have omitted but at the very least they are genuinely quick and how could you leave out someone like Judd, Bradley or Betts?

In my voyage through the Blueseum to unearth older grass burners I can across plenty of speed demons who didn't meet the games requirement but were awesomely fast - these I have added as emergencies.

I named Armfield as the injury sub because of his versatility - everyone else on the bench is a midfielder. Anyway, here is the team:

RUMNEY JONES MCGOVERN
SAAD PEROVIC N CLARK
BRUCE MCGREGOR E KENNEDY
JACKSON KOUTOUFIDES L KERR
MCKERNAN WAITE BETTS
DE KONNING JUDD BRADLEY
COLLINS COOPER KELLY QUIRK ARMFIELD
Emerg CARNEY GREEN GUTTERSON G KERR MARCHESANI MCCONNON OGDEN O’HAILPIN ROBINSON SKINNER SIMMONS

I couldn't not name the 1906-8 centreline as a unit notwithstanding that you could argue for Laurie Kerr and/or Socks Cooper to be across the centreline ahead of one or both of the wingmen, both of whom were utter stars.

And with the exception of Armstrong and Dennis Collins the team is entirely made up of stars and outright champions. if you want to make it exclusively stars replace Armfield and Collins with Ern Henfry and Keith Shea both speedy genuine champions who fell a little short of the 100 game mark - in both cases due to playing for extended periods in the WAFL.

Keith also had the distinction of being the brother of legendary publican and Blues fanatic the late Kath Byers of the Notting Hill Hotel (who I grew up calling Aunty Kath so regular a Nott patron was my father).

So who have I missed - or included undeservedly?

B.Doull can move with the best when agitated.

Ones that come to mind
Chris Yarran
Jeff Garlett
And as big blokes go, Harry when he winds up get a fair gallop up

Armfield must be one of the most genuine speedsters in a straight line I've seen play for us. Not bad for a blonde bricklayer dude.

Once saw a clip on You tube of Garlett intercepting a handpass while running in the opposite direction between 2 Gold Coast players, because the camera was panning one direction and he was going the other, it just looked like a Blue Blur take the ball:oops:

Found it, picture quality didn't help

Others not already mentioned that I can remember-
Mark Naley
Mil Hanna
Fraser Murphy
Alex Marcou
Vin Catoggio
David Glascott
Quick definitely - except maybe Glascott but I will cede to others views on him but not sure they were express, I know I,ve included guys like Bradley and Betts who were not express either but as I noted I gave them some leeway based on champion status.

Quick, but soft as butter

Reserves game at PP before the main game, all in erupted, everyone in, apart from Collins and a Cats player who were 20 metres apart handblling to each other
And famously flopped when Robbie Muir took a swipe at him - but perhaps that was a wise move given it was Robbie Muir.

Pickett could have been anything cruelled by injury - he was the fastest bloke I've seen in Navy Blue - untouchable in open space - saw him slice through 6-7 Sydney would be tacklers at the SCG over and over again - same day as Byrne did his ACL and Buddy kicked a million goals.

Came in to say Yarran & Garlett, see it's covered. Armfield too had underrated speed. Didn't have the agility but straight line he could go with anyone.

I think Harry has topped our telstra tacker with the highest top speed a couple of times, though I suggest that's without the ball. Some guys are fast ball in hand and some aren't, I don't think H moves so well ball in hand but in an open sprint he'd be close to top of the current crop.

Saad is up there too. Maybe not this yr, but in his first yr or 2 with us he still had his top end speed. I think he's lost a slight step now but is still plenty quick enough.

Judd was elite in acceleration. First 10 metres, he could create a gap like no one else. But beyond that he was B+/A- speed which is still plenty quick enough but not in the fastest ever convo.

Sure, speed is fun, but can we celebrate deceleration? Special mention of Marc Murphy, had the best brakes I've ever seen, and it's not particularly close. Going from high end speed to standing still in a step and half it felt like.
