Argentina win it on pens, 4-2. One of the best finals I've ever watched. Messi undoubtedly the greatest of his generation now and arguably the greatest of all-time.

What a world cup final

A nuts game. France were shocking for 70 minutes and then just turned it on. Mbappe was ridiculous. The only thing missing was an ET winner.

In the end the difference between the two sides was Martinez in the shootout. Lloris was terrible.

I want to live in a world where I can recognise the true spectrum of Messi's greatness without disrespecting Pele or Maradona by appointing the current player as the greatest of all time.
Pele is the greatest all time

Maradona was a cheating fat prick (although that 'other' goal against England was unreal)

Messi close imo

Ronaldo was the player that seemed to be neck to neck with Messi for a lot of their careers. Ronaldo has gone down in flames while Messi goes out as a potential GOAT.

Those guys are before my time following world soccer but you have to rely on the people that saw both I guess. I think a lot of modern champions probably would beat the past champions because the bar keeps getting set higher for every era. Some of those older guys may have been stars now but to me to withstand the increase in tactics, professionalism, science, fitness etc and still rise to the top are huge achievements. There is a good argument that you can only beat what's in front of you though.

If u look back at pele it's nothing flash and tricky like today and doesn't even look that spectacular
But again for his time no one could claim to be better

Same now with messi , yet id take him over Maradona

Its like the Jordan v LeBron debate
It'll always be Jordan, but
It was totally different era,
Jordan would average more now imo
Had to earn a foul back in the 80s early 90s

There is no Bradman of soccer. Let me clarify my thoughts on world football.

I played it for ten years as a kid. I loved, absolutely loved playing it, couldn't wait for the season to roll around and then gameday. Played almost every night with a friend and his brother and dad on their mini pitch until dark.
Great game, watching it just is not my go. So apologies if I offended anybody who loves the game. It sounded disparaging and that could sound insulting for lovers of the game.

Who's disrespected anyone?

I feel the same about tennis, played a decent pennant level in my teens and loved it (despite the smashed rackets).
Couldn’t pay me to watch it, bores the absolute shit out of me.

Football (Soccer) needs a single adjustment to make it more attractive and less susceptible to violence. Net needs to be made larger to take into account the fact that people have got taller.

The net is currently its 8ft x 24ft. Make it 9ft x 26 ft and its a whole new ball game.

We don't need to change a game to make it less susceptible to crowd violence. People who are violent need to stop being violent. If it wasn't at a soccer game it would be somewhere else. A flare is not an unimpeachable cultural object - it's a functional tool for alerting people to being lost at sea.

People who are violent need to stop being violent.

I've always thought this is a weird argument. Violence comes from somewhere. Surely you need to understand what causes people to be violent before opining on it? If you're just engaging at the level of "stop doing that" then you're not contributing much useful to the discussion.

Ronaldo relied a lot more on his athleticism compared to Messi IMO But Ronaldo's ending to his career has been a shocker.

Pele is the greatest all time

Messi close imo
If Van Basten did not get ruined by injuries he could have had a good shot at reaching Pele/Maradon/Messi levels imo

"The game is too boring" was the argument being proposed there. Why don't I read about golf riots then?

My point is the responsibility for the violence rests with those perpetrating the violence.

of course it does, how do you ban someone from entering the ground? if you can walk up and by a ticket. now flares, there should be better security checks.

Firstly, there are plenty of secure spaces everywhere. You can simply prevent anyone from going anywhere if you are prepared to do it.

Secondly, anyone at a sporting event who covers their face with a balaclava or mask isn't doing for any other reason than to prevent identification. Kick them out as soon as they do it.

This isn't difficult, it's a question of being prepared to do what is necessary when criticism comes.

Yeah the moral responsibility does. And obviously it's not caused by the game being too boring. But these are guys with a propensity to violence. If you manage to keep them out of the football then they'll be violent elsewhere. The right solution is to work out why they're being violent and try to reduce those causal factors rather than just treating one symptom.

Yeah, my son reckons that Messi was born obscenely talented where as Ronaldo was born talented but also had to work his arse off to get every drop to rise to the top.
