Was researching the other day and saw that the other game known as Rugby League sends a full round of games to a stadium in Wales and next year will be doing the same in Scotland

These are in no way traditional Rugby League areas but manage to sell pretty good

If we could copy this idea, we could have games at the SCG, ANZ Stadium and No.1 Sports Ground in Newcastle.

This could help promote our sport of footie in non-traditional areas and screw Rugby League up completely.

What's your thoughts?

the difference: scotland and wales dont have rugby league, and will go for the novalty of it, where as sydney already have afl, and in 3 years will have 2 teams...
if people wanted to see afl in sydney they could simply go to sydney swans games
if they wanted to see league in wales or scotland at an elite level, they could not.

Wales has a Super League team called the Celtic Crusaders coming in next year after they gained promotion and Scotland should have an NL2 side next season if they want it as the RFL said they can join if they feel they are up to it, they have until September to answer.

Both these places have their own conferences and divisions and both should have pro sides next season, Wales def does.

The only UK based part not to have a pro/semi pro side yet is Ireland, but they still play the game, they have their own conference and a few divisions.

Google Celtic Crusaders

Toulouse from France will be letting the RFL know if they will be joining the NL1 comp next season in September as well.

Playing games like Fremantle v Melbourne at ANZ Stadium would draw about six people...

What about an AFL Grand Final at ANZ Stadium? Imagine the hype in Sydney.

If not that, how about an International Rules game? Why is it always in Melbourne or Perth? Do the AFL not realise how big the Irish and footy population in Sydney is? Biggest Irish population in Australia is in Sydney... Hello AFL. Sydney Football Stadium or ANZ Stadium awaits.

They tried something similar in 1953, with the VFL (as it was then known) playing a round at the SCG, Brisbane, Hobart and also regional towns Euroa, Yallourn and Albury. The idea was canned after one season.

As for playing an entire round in Sydney, I don't see the point. The Swans are already established here, and when West Sydney come in there will be a game in Sydney every week.

I'm with you, an entire round of AFL in Sydney sounds stupid. How about Australia v Ireland... International Rules at the Sydney Football Stadium or ANZ Stadium? Now.... I'd like to see that. We have a big Irish population in Sydney... add to that the AFL supporters and you are guranteed a good crowd. C'mon AFL, make it happen.. Stop ignoring us when it comes to the International Rules series.

they had their chance wen the mcg was getting redeveloped and the capacity was low..
also, there is a contract with the mcc and mcg that they play a certain amount of games there each finals series plus the grand final, thats y in 2004 they have brisbane's home game against geelong at the g.

Well they actually tried to do that . NRL accused the AFL of trying to rail on their (wc) parade .Seemingly it was a venue clash but seemed implausible because thye were going to stage it at the SCG, which would be an excellent venue for IR.
P.S. SFS is way too small for Gaelic/IR games .

Kevin Sheedy proposed that the first round be an international round- all games held overseas .A bold idea -an a fairly costly one .

I like it for the pre-season comp, and have all the second round - and all that week's practice games - at regional venues. No "real" games are lost to the club's home bases, but an Australian Football "event" is held in various places.

The first round could even be split over two weeks, so those travelling further than SE Asia could get the extra week off before the second round.

Of course, structuring the pre-season comp with 18 teams will be a little trickier. (That is if a pre-season comp still exists, and some practice is necessary so why not make a comp out of it if it generates a tiny amount of extra interest.)

That's a very good idea.

Have games at London, Wellington/Auckland, Cape Town, Copenhagen, Dublin, China, India and Dubai

Come on AFL!

More than what Sydney RL clubs get at at ANZ Stadium!

I'm all for the international round, maybe for the preseason. But there is no point of giving all games in one round to Sydney/NSW, it wouldn't be a novelty, and I'm sure that 8 AFL games wouldn't outsell the 5-6 NRL games in Sydney in the same week.

Though The AFL could even have a National Heritage round with one game played in each state/territory for one round... Oh the ideas...

I'd be OK with the GF not always @ the 'G.

Have it in the home state of whoever finishes on top.

As long as their ground holds 95K.

Imagine just the Swans making a NAB Cup Final and playing it at ANZ.

How about a game of AFL (Less player numbers) on the League Grounds?

Say Footy 9's or something played on League/Soccer Grounds, have one weekend where they play at ANZ and one at Suncorp.

All 16 Clubs, big money for teams, players and fans to win....?

Good idea for a summer night time competition.
