Workshop Future Expansion Team Designs

It's been rumoured around WA for the last few years that Western Australia will be receiving a third team in the AFL in the distant future.

Though I believe that a place like Tasmania would have more chances of success in becoming the next expansion team, let's use this thread to do some forward thinking about who might be lucky 19 and 20?

____ has lots of ideas. I did a few but I don't think I did a WA team.
This is the WA team I did, if AFL does introduce a third team I don't think this would be it though (would probably aim for no WAFL allegiances)

Perth United (Royal Falcons)

Nickname: "The Royal Falcons". Combination of West and East Perth's nicknames.

Main kit: Half V yoke and half sash, in the combined red, black and blue colours of West and East Perth, Blue shorts with red and black stripe, Blue socks with red and black hoops.

Would be my team for sure, but a third team in WA would most likely be located in the Northern Suburbs or Rockingham IMO.

Perth wouldn't be used for the same reason WCE didn't.

I'd much prefer to see a side in tassie, build a side there that plays half their games in Hobart and the rest in Launceston. Hawks be mad.
The other side would have to be a Tropics side, playing games in Cairns, Darwin and one in either Singapore, Japan or China?

I'd love another VIC team.
Let me expand on this. I've seen the positive effects GWS has had on Western Sydney and football. Melbourne City's rebrand and Melbourne Victory's success has had positive effects of soccer in Melbourne. The AFL has to fight back on this by introducing a VIC team which would bring footy back to No.1.

No way Fizzler ,

Victorian teams in the AFL already hold such a monopoly. For starters they barely need to travel unlike Interstate clubs ( which, to me is a ridiculously unfair advantage,) and some, like the Dogs, Saints and Roos are still cash strapped.

There are already too many teams in Melbourne. In addition, Aussie Rules has never, and will never be dethroned as number 1 sport in Melbourne.

I'm not so convinced

Jealous of the best state, are we? Nah, but in all seriousness you are right that there are too many teams, but I have a feeling the Dogs and Roos will be receiving more money as they are really improving. Give em a premiership and they'll be richer in no time. They both made the finals last year, and the richer clubs (Collingwood, Carlton and Essendon) all didn't make finals.
BTW, Gill said the next team will be in Tassie but not before the next 10 years. He said that when he started as the AFL boss.

One in Tassie and one in the NT or Canberra is what it should be. No other states need an extra team.

WA and SA are both footy mad but the two teams they each have are fine, VIC is fine, and NSW and Queensland are more rugby orientated.

The only thing I could see with WA is if we get a Perth version of the Dockers, i.e. something that is similar in ethos, a tribal suburban working-man's club, as opposed to the WCE who are seen as the chardonnay big-city NFL-style franchise. If that happened though, I actually think the Dockers would take the hit, as a lot of non-Fremantle people support the Dockers as it feels like an old-skool tribal suburban club; I think the Eagles fans wouldn't really swap over to the "Urban Perth" team.

That's what I was thinking. I could only think that it would be the anti-Eagles guys who barrack for Freo who would join in or jump ship. Unless there is an untapped market in Perth for footy. Who knows? Maybe a northern corridor team? But honestly, the Glory has got the best chance of expansion in that area.

In the old days though, I thought that the next big club could have been a "Greater Swan Districts" team. One that covers the traditional Swans area from Morley, Bassendean, Guildford, Midland, Swan View, through Middle Swan & Ellenbrook and out to Upper Swan. I thought that that could be a natural expansion area, based on the identity of an established WAFL club.
