Last nights crowd for Carlton vs Essendon was 83,638.

Just announced on the TV that Melbourne vs Collingwood has a crowd of 83,638.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say there would have been a handful of games tops in the history of the competition with exactly the same crowd in the same round. But I certainly doubt it has ever happened in consecutive games of over 80k.

Can any of you history buffs or stats boffins shed any light on other occurrences?

Edit: The AFL have now confirmed the crowd at 83,578. How could Collingwood and Channel 7 let this happen?!

There would have to be a few games in 2020 with crowds of 0, surely a few happened in the same round. 😉

On a slight sidetrack, I'm waiting for the day when a crowd figure ends in 000.

I attended the 2007 Preliminary Final with a mate, where the crowd was 98,002, so it's all my fault that it didn't happen that day.

Maybe it's because if a crowd ended in 000, it would be assumed to be an estimate so they add a couple of "extras". When Mount Everest was measured back in the 1950's it came up at exactly 28,000 feet, but it was decided to be listed in all publications at 28,002 because it was thought that if it was listed at 28,000 everyone would think it was an estimate.

Given there are about 200 games a year, a game ending in 000 should happen once every five years (over 1000 games) but I can't recall it ever happening

A few from AFL Tables https://afltables.com/afl/stats/biglists/bg7.txt:

1297. 49000 Western Bulldogs 13.15.93 Collingwood 19.15.129 Docklands 28-Mar-2010
4281. 31000 Carlton 22.18.150 Geelong 14.10.94 Waverley Park 9-May-1987
5816. 26000 Port Adelaide 8.15.63 Melbourne 6.10.46 Football Park 14-Aug-1999
9693. 17000 Carlton 8.13.61 Adelaide 26.9.165 Docklands 25-Aug-2018

There's a couple from the covid years 2020/21 and many from the 1965 and earlier, however these are most likely estimations.
