Rank 1st to 3rd best player. I've put the options in alphabetical order.

Rating these players is always hard for me.

Lockett was an incredibly dominant force who regularly kicked 10 plus goals in his prime.
Crowds would switch ends to watch him each quarter.
Ablett snr was freakiskly skilled and magical to watch.
Carey was a superbly balanced athlete that could do it all.
All 3 were physically dominant players.

All three of them are rather questionable people, though it is not a good list if Tony Lockett is easily the best person in it. Ablett and Carey better hope there is no heaven and hell because I don't think they would like where they would end up.

I was hoping to talk about football ability only.
Mike Sheahan said Carey was the best but Ablett snr is often picked 1.
Lockett was probably the most dominant player ever at his peak.

Are you the moral police, the question was in what order do you rate them as footballers. Never was it asked who would make the best life advisor.

That was done in 1996.
Yes, that's how a century works. 100 years.
Well done Robinson Crusoe.

2 of the 3 got past 1000 goals, and the 'Carey played CHF so his tally is less' argument is a bit moot when Ablett spent 3/4 of his career at HFF/Wing.
His 3 full seasons at FF were comparable to what Plugger achieved seasonally in the same position over a few seasons.

So I think no.1 and no.2 here are clear. It's Plugger or Ablett in whatever order floats your boat. Carey no.3

It's not clear, Carey could play anywhere on the field and did kick big bags of goals.
Incidently Carey rated Ablett snr 9th of all time which I thought was a bit bitchy.

Carey would be lucky to be in the top 3 in this era. Jason Dunstall getting slept on here something shocking.
Easily better than the duck also.

Totally Agree
Lockett best full forward - with Dunstall breathing down his neck.
Ablett best player overall.
Carey a bit overrated. Glenn Jakovich used to towel him up.

If you had Pick 1 in the draft who would you take out of them?

And No the answer is not Richard Tambling.

If you lock up your wives, you would take Carey and build a team around him.

Dunstall is the answer you are looking for.
Should probably be in this thread . I think most Hawks would agree as a crowd pleaser [ not saying Dunstall wasn't ] he's not quite in the league of the other 3. But all truly great players.
For me, Ablett snr the best player I've seen and fantastic to watch . A short half head against Lockett. Wheras Dunstall was purely a full forward, Lockett could have short stints in the ruck , and Carey primarily CHF [ a more difficult posy] , Ablett snr had a bit more flexibilty . Could play back flank/ wing/ forward flank .
Bit like choosing between Megan Gale or Jennifer Hawkins isn't it? Personal choice.
