I have two days in Geelong for work - any suggestions for decent place to eat and drink? Night life might also be on the cards depending on work situation.. We are in our late twenties. Would prefer to avoid bogans if possible.

You had me until that last sentence.

If you are in town you could try the new Geelong Hotel (formerly the Corio Hotel) in Yarra Street.
Then there is the Sporting Globe around the corner on Ryrie st and Union St corner (opposite the Village cinema). The Carrington on the crn of Myers and Yarra sts did have a good reputation for food but it has been a while since I have been there.

As to night life. I am probably twice your age but Lamby's Tavern @ 66 Brougham St was popular.

HomeHouse night club at 40/42 Moorabool St is only a Gary Ablett drop punt from Lamby's.
It may be handy if you are planning to go out Whenching.

I used to frequent the Max on Friday and Saturday nights. I could not tell you what it is like now, but it was not a bad pub back when I used to frequent night clubs and pubs

Our kitchen opens from 5.30pm for dinner. Wed-Sat

(booking esential to guarantee tables)

The Eureka was always popular as a night spot and attracted ladies that were very easy on the eye.

The Edge bar and Restaurant on the Water front could also be an option. I think that Lingy owns that place.

The Lord Nelson Hotel on the corner of Malop and Bellarine sts has just been refurbished.
It is a pub not a night club, and it has a good reputation for food.

All the above are in the city area. I have not bothered with pubs outside the Geelong CBD even though some of them are very good.

Arrive on Monday - where should we be watching the Melbourne Cup in Geelong?

It will on on TV at any pub (free to air). The Sporting Globe in Ryrie St. may be the go. They have a large screen out in the beer garden and plasmas in the main building.

Could have gone to the Commo and had Larry Donahue pour you a pot at time of posting hah.

I have had many counter teas there in the past where Larry poured my beer.

Finest establishment in Geelong for mine.

Meals are good value. But so is the Saleyards. And I like to have a counter meal on ....the bar counter as per the Yardz.

Speaking of Larry, I played lawn bowls at drumcondra last week and who should serve me from behind the bar ... the colossus that is Larry Donahue.

Carrington was recently renovated I think. The Max has also been revamped and caters more to a younger crowd. The Commo (Kilgour St) and Sir Charles Darling are my pick for pub meals, otherwise The Edge is worth a try. Sailors' Rest is a good lunch/dinner option too - had a delicious and unbelievably huge plate of mussels there recently.

Nightlife-wise, Lamby's is the pick of the bunch for those in their late 20s and above, though I'm not sure what it's like now. All the other clubs are frequented by 18-25 y.o's and some (particularly Home House and Eureka) have issues with drugs, violence, bogans etc.

You know that you have one foot in the grave and the other on a banana skin when you take up lawn bowls.

It's a young mans sport these days so you no longer qualify. ;)

I will be celebrating my 19th on the 10th of December, I will have you know.

These college boys never learned respect at school....obviously.
There are lots of people I admire and respect, but I don't necessarily want to be like them. ;)

Amazing. I saw him last night hah. He was on the fun side of the bar this time.

I like the Commo for something to eat.
Going out I find Lambys is better for the over 25's. Pain in the arse if you smoke though.
Barwon Club if you wanna see a band and chill out out in the beer garden. Closes about 1 or 2 though.
Edit: Just realised this thread was made 3 weeks ago. My bad.
