Essendon and Geelong meet in a clash vital to the Dons finals hopes in the VFL this season, whilst Geelong will be looking to book a top 4 place in the competition, although a home final looks out of reach for the Cats. Essendon have won 5 of the last 6 games against Geelong but have hit a run of some very poor form, losing the last 5 games, whilst Geelong have won 5 of their last 6 games in the VFL, including ladder topping Richmond.

Geelong defeated the Tigers by a whopping 52 points down in Geelong, leading pretty much from start to finish to press their case for a top 4 finish at the end of the season. Charlie Constable was one of the Cats best, collecting 33 disposals whilst key forward Wylie Buzza had 22 touches and kicked 3 goals for the Cats.

Essendon had a very close loss to Port Melbourne away from home, going down by 5 points in a topsy-turvy game, but a poor second quarter where the Borough kicked 4.2 to 0.3 cost the Dons. Jayden Laverde was excellent in the midfield and forward of centre, collecting 28 disposals and kicking a goal, whilst small forward Danny Younan continued to fire up forward with 3 goals, the small not going goalless at all.

Geelong are hard to beat at home, Cats by 15

Hind - Hartley - Ridley
Hocking - Dea - Zerk-Thatcher
Merrett - Heppell - Mynott
Laverde - Stewart - Long
Boyse - Leuenberger - Green
Draper - Clarke - Mutch

Collins - Dixon - Houlahan - Laguda
McQueen - Sheahan - Sibbald - Younan
23P: Hanna

Houlahan, Younan, Sheahan should play. Last one between McQueen and Collins for me.

Big chance for Dea, Hartley, Stewart, even Leuey given how much Bellchambers was played forward last night.

We can really only get past Footscray or Port. Need to win this badly, if North get up we can potentially get past the Dogs and Port next week.

Our two sides' seasons have followed opposing trajectories. Senior side was putrid early and is now up and about; the magoos started on fire and have fallen in a complete heap.

So our VFL side isn’t very good

Well on top of covering injuries, they decided to pull Green, Laverde and Ridley out late to ensure cover for Tigers game. Coaching staff priority is seniors not winning VFL games.

So our VFL side isn’t very good
Whether our VFL side wins games or not is completely and utterly irrelevant.
This season is solely about doing what is best to:
1) Develop AFL players
2) Get our AFL team into the finals
On 1) look at the last 3 - 4 years, and we seem to be going well in developing players.
Only real misses of the 2014-2016 draft years who didnt come on are Yestin Eades who had off field issues and Alex Morgan.
Add that we have Tippa, McKenna and Draper as rookie picks who have developed then i will back our VFL program hands down.
