Latest media reports have General Motors close to bankruptcy and in merger discussions with Chrysler (links here, here and here). They've been looking very shaky for the last 12 months, have not made a profit since 2004, and may just about to be finished off due to the world financial crisis. It also appears the others of the big three, Chrysler and Ford, are not much better off.

If these reports are correct then this could result in the biggest shake up of the global car industry in our lifetimes (stating the obvious). So many questions, such as what happens to Holden?

Pretty sure this has been the case for a couple of years with the US government propping GM up as it would see thousands of people lose their jobs if GM went under. As I understand it, Holden is the only GM brand that turn a profit? Both Ford and GM haven't been exactly successful with their brand acquisitions over recent years either.
It's going to be a difficult turnaround for the US giants given the growth of the Asian brands that would have lower overheads to produce cheaper cars, especially in the ever-expanding small car market. Good luck to em.

Both have been hemraging millions for years, just the other day i read even toyota finished in the red. It's not good but we can only hope things change for the car industry, maybe even move everything to china if its the only way.
