I just listened the replay of his last broadcast with Bob Maumill on 6PR. It was good to hear the old bugger again and then Howard played that argument George had with Percy Johnson on Sports Central. I had to laugh again. He was pretty rough towards Freo sometimes but deep down I think he loved our club. Afterall, he raised fair bit of money for us.

RIP George.

i thought 90% of the time he was fair when it came to freo. Fair enough for him to be disappointed with the way freo was run and the boys club there. we disagreed at the time but now most of us think the scwhabby cuddles thing wasn't healthy. Was always good entertainment was George.

I never quite got why you would want someone who has a lack of ability to listen to other peoples opinions to run a talkback program. Most callers could barely complete a sentance before he would get stuck into them, or simply start telling us his opinion; related to the callers call or not.

He had a massive agenda to destabilise the club and create it in his own image. Contributed to the Croad debacle, amongst other things. Pillaried the club, then wondered why they chose not to talk to him.

Yeah... Blessim. :)

It was Wally that I'm glad died. Couldn't have happened soon enough.

Was always a fan but he lost me after the derby when Freo got a bit physical.
For 2 weeks after the game George was carrying on and on about reports here there and everywhere.
It was a 2 week winge fest and he was a prime mover.

But I still miss him for his ability to make me mad as hell

He was great value, had some classic oneliners. We need more personalities like george, many of the current commentators are dull as dogshit and only have knowledge that relates to sport. George had a wealth of knowledge on many subjects which really added to my interest in listening to him.

a classic george moment (out of many) was the time jason ball's mother rang up his radio station to fight for him when george was mocking ball and his game

*mother never fights for me anymore ;) )

George used to annoy the hell out of me and entertain me in equal measure. He was opinionated and I think his opinion was often wrong. But I miss listening to him. The radio and the world was better off for him being here.
And yes he hung up on me when I called his show and he did not agree with me. It may have annoyed me at the time, but we should celebrate genuine people and genuine characters.

Cant understand the support for the old bugger. He had a vendetta against anything EFFC or Freo FC that wasnt involving South Freo.

FFS if it had abit more of a EFFC flavor in the squad then we might have done better.

I guess some people move on after awhile, I don't think there is much benefit in holding a grudge against a dead guy.

I don't think it's holding a grudge Stronzo. I don't think anyone has been disrespectful in here (and there's no need to do so), but I also don't think it's realistic to expect people to change their opinion of someone just because they are no longer here.
Of course not, though there should be a greater scope given to the positive aspects of his life. And I think George had a lot more positives attributes than he did negative.

Who really cares if he had an agenda 10 years ago, there is really not much value in whinging about it now.

People are perfectly entitled to weight whatever specific aspects of his life they want to in determining their overall opinion of him. I dont believe death should act to absolve someone of their faults and in effect canonise them either.

That said he certainly contributed significantly in many other areas.

Ten years ago? I saw him at footy on the road in the week leading up to our final against Melbourne and he told a 90% eagles crowd in Woodvale that he was hoping we'd lose and would be betting on the Demons.

The negatives of George were obvious, but what were the positive aspects of his life? He watched sport for a living, what a tough job!!

Well you can blame the EFFC off field flavor for that. Present = Buhagier, Malaxos, Spalding, and in the past Broadbridge, Waterman & Eastaugh. Plus a few more that I just can't bring to mind;)
