Some were against the idea when I floated it of chasing 2025 free agent Darcy Fogharty but he does something that our keys currently can't. Take good contested marks.
Watching the game last night and thought I would take a look at the Adelaide list, It is a bad list. The only players I would take from their list are Fogarty and Rankine. Maybe Laird at a pinch for a couple of years as an inside mid/accumulator. Given our list Fogarty would be the one I would want.

This is where we will have to agree to disagree.

I see zurhaar as something completely different to what we have in our team now. I don’t see him as purely a forward, and I think the gains he would bring would be more than marginal.

I see him as having the potential to play the de Goey role. I may be smoking some good stuff but that is what I see.

He will be expensive, but not as expensive as a good mid.

If we have to give up a bunch of draft capital and lay out a long term deal for a Bailey smith type then no thanks - give me zurhaar at his cost every time.

Someone like LDU would be a different story, he is a guy I would happily pay up for and if he was a possibility for us I would say go hard for him.

Basically what I am saying is if we are going to pay the high price it will cost for a high level mid, then they need to be a high probability play, someone who does not have red flags and is close to a sure thing.
The cost of trading in Oliver or Smith would obviously be higher than a free agent like Zurhaar but you have to spend money to make money.

Taking on Zurhaar I feel is like getting your mum to go buy you NBA jam for super Nintendo and she comes back with Lee Carvallos putting challenge. Thanks, but why did we get this?

with us routingely getting smashed center square and stoppages, do we think we should ask the question on sean darcy again? former falcon, only 25, workhorse in the ruck all day, can conway do 20% ruck, 80% forward in the future?
Absolutely not. Durability issues and a massive contract are not a good combination.

You would be taking a massive liability off the books of your opposition and taking it on yourself

I also think he's a similar type to Welsh to the sounds of it. An early bird on him puts pressure on the crows to pump games into Welsh, then this time next year maybe they're not as desperate to keep big Darcy

Dawson surely? We'd be odds on for a flag if you could slot him into our midfield.

I had Adelaide as bottom 4 last year due to the quality of their list. They obviously outperformed that comfortably but this year is more reflective of where they are actually at. Crazy that people had them a finals chance this year. Their coach is stuffed on an actual ability v supporter expectations basis. Genuine dead man walking.

Yes. Can’t elaborate so don’t ask. More confident with Oliver than Smith.
Oliver would want to improve his form among other things. He's been average this year. Okay-ish at finding the ball but a liability with it, and offers zero defensively. Melbourne's midfield has been well beaten by some mediocre sides.

I understand he had no pre-season, but he isn't the Oliver of 2021/2022.

We could easily be getting into another Jack Steven type situation.

I still think it’s very much down to his pre season he basically hasn’t had one , you can see the lack of real preparation when he plays imo

At least one (maybe both if we can facilitate trades) for Oliver and Smith will be Cats next year. Lock it in.

Smith i believe.

Oliver i dont think they will do it cheap enough and the contract is an albatross.

Oliver's big contract means we will probably get him cheap in a trade.

Im not sure why melbourne would dump him cheap unless they can replace him with a quality kpf and there arent really any of those on the market.

So who's the back up ruck we need to go after next year 🤔
Obviously Conway is the future, but we need the back up ruck that may have to play 10-15 games as the durability of Conway is a big question mark?

Ill start with Peter Ladhams. Might be still in contact but the amount of games his played for Sydney, you would get him for a pick 50

No

i know he has a decent length contract but wasnt aware of any major injury issues

He signed through to 2030 in December just gone - so it's not just a decent contract, but a long term contract & a length we rarely offer. Even Cameron was a 5-yr deal with a trigger for a 6th year, so it would be surprising if we were willing to take on a contract of 6-yrs that was originally negotiated by an opposition team

As for injuries, he was drafted with pick 38 in 2016 and he made his debut in round with 14 of 2017. Of his 7 completed seasons, only twice has he played 20+ games (21 games in each of 2021 & 2022), with his next most games being 15 in 2020 & 2023

There has to be questions over his durability, plus the cost to acquire him both in terms of taking on his contract & the asking price from Fremantle would just be crazy stupid

Rather we back in Conway & Edwards as our future rucks, but then look at a mature back up option to replace Stanley

Plus, Darcy turns 26 next week on the 12th - should be coming into peak age for a ruck, but I don't trust his ability to stay on the park

Given the contract it would certainly not be like a Jack Steven situation 😬
