But why do we expect him to take unders? Why should we take advantage of his loyalty? It is distasteful.

I have a simple idea - pay the man what he is worth. Fair and equitable for both sides. That is how you build and maintain culture in any organisation.

Are we playing in a professional league or not?

You're assuming that the offer from Geelong is unders - maybe the offer from the club is what he's worth is deemed at

If other clubs are upping their offers to try & pry him away from Geelong, is it not therefore possible that they're actually paying overs?

Geelong isn't known to over pay for players - either external recruits coming to the club or more importantly when re-signing our own

Whatever the offer from Geelong is currently sitting at, I'm quite comfortable that it's a fair offer & Tyson will be suitable looked after

It's interesting because I'm sure I've read comments in the past regarding players like Stringer pulling the finger out in a contract year...

A couple of years back in an earlier iteration of this thread I'm pretty sure we saw more than a few posters happy to Jordan Clark move on as some deemed him lazy, and wouldn't be surprised if I saw a similar line used in discussion of SDK this year

I think one thing we all need to be mindful of is that we should all be able to provide constructive criticism & critiques of players, and it's fine for others to disagree with what's said, without accusations that said comments have unsavoury undertones.

If a comment was along the lines of, "indigenous players have been known to be lazy, so we shouldn't overpay Stengle with this contract", then yeah that's pretty obviously overstepping the line

But if the comment is along the lines of, "Stengle is having a great season but he was down on form last year, so I'd be happy to not overpay him based on half a great season if the return over the next few years is more like 2023 instead", then surely it's a fair assessment

Obviously wording changes amongst individual posters, but surely we can all differentiate between critiquing an individual & making larger generalisations
You have just described explicit racism, not casual racism.

Which is why I referenced casual racism and not explicit racism.

You quoted Joel Selwood saying that players need to take unders to be at Geelong. And implying that Stengle should be happy to do so.

I am not suggesting that Geelong are offering unders. All I am suggesting that we should not pray on his loyalty and expect him to take less than what he is worth.

We are better than that.

Again - no one has suggested we've asked him to take unders

You could ask 100 different people what they'd offer as a contract, but at the end of the day it means shit all as the discussion is between our list management team & the Stengle camp

Highly doubt that the discussion & offers from our side are disrespectful or distasteful - it may not be at the value some fans deem him to be worth, but it would be in the range in which the club deems his worth

Quite rightly stated, we usually don’t lose players we want to keep. I do believe we would offer him a fair deal financially. However Tyson’s circumstances are unique. He’s achieved the ultimate team success and been all-Australian. He knows he needs to cash in now to help him in life post-footy and to make up for lost time. Being close to Eddie in Melb will also be an important factor. If we’re offering $700-750k, it’s likely someone will be offering $800-850k possibly on a longer deal. That might not sound like a lot but if any of us were offered $50-150k more money doing the same job, I know what most of you would choose. Multiply that by X years and it’s a lot of money. If he leaves, any compo for Tyson will likely be in the late teens-20s, which could be used along with our first pick this year to acquire Bailey Smith (+\- something small coming back from WB depending on how high our first pick will be). That’s just how I see it. That being said, I still feel he’ll stay.

The rumours of $700k sound about right. If that's the number we offer that's not low balling him. It's just offering a reasonable amount that we think he's worth.

Because he's a small forward who doesn't have the ability to develop into a midfielder I don't think we should be that worried if he decides to leave. Quality player but he's not worth a top 3 contract at a club and we should be able to cover him in some form much cheaper than that.

Hopefully that's enough to keep him. But if a club comes in offering $900k+ and he decides to leave so be it.

A
I like your joke but if I were Carlton I’d be moving heaven and earth to somehow get the money for Tyson
It’s actually sickening a team like the saints are interested in him
Wouldn’t suit him one bit

You could understand him looking at a team like Carlton or Essendon as a potential home

But if St Kilda swoop in, offer him a crazy deal which he accepts then surely it’s a 🤨🤨🤨 - not sure how that would benefit his career, though he’s likely be happy with his bank balance

Don't Carlton already have a bunch of mega-contracts? If the Blues got him, it would raise questions about which club is mismanaging their cap - them (loading up yet another big contract)...us (for being too conservative when we're about to have a decent chunk of cap freed)...or are we keeping our powder dry for another target/s?

From all reports he wants to live in Melbourne closer to Eddie and his manager. He isnt a fan of the Geelong lifestyle.

Yet Geelong appealed to him when it came to choosing a club to sign for because of the quieter lifestyle, a bit like his hometown of Adelaide.

His words, not mine.

So just a 20 year old person who is still in year 12 trying still what he can do in life 🤔😁
They’re called ‘influencers’ 😜

One thing I don't think we should see is people getting angry at him for leaving.

Just be happy he came.

I'll always love the man
Just as with GAJ, was welcomed at KP. Then returned to Geelong.
