On what basis would you think this to be the case?

Be careful, because your post above could easily be interpreted as casual racism.
Give me a spell!

Many footballers have become comfortable on a big money long term deals..
did you miss the part where I mentioned Stengle is one of my favorite players!

Yet Geelong appealed to him when it came to choosing a club to sign for because of the quieter lifestyle, a bit like his hometown of Adelaide.

His words, not mine.
Yes with Eddie here, now Eddie isnt!! He also hadnt tried Geelong lifestyle yet so couldnt say he would enjoy it or not

In that scenario we would just trade like p60 for wood so we dont dilute compo (as has been done before).

St kilda might kick up a fuss.

A 3 year deal on ok money would probably net them an end of 2nd so they’d probably rather the compo. We’d find a way because you wouldn’t want to dilute the Stengle compo. But it might be a bit more than a real late throwaway. Which would make wood far less appealing

The obvious difference between now and then and the desire ‘to live closer to Eddie’ as the other poster mentioned, is eddie is no longer a coach at our club.

But if the comment is along the lines of, "Stengle is having a great season but he was down on form last year, so I'd be happy to not overpay him based on half a great season if the return over the next few years is more like 2023 instead", then surely it's a fair assessment

Without discussing the race element of the previous post, you’ve mentioned things along these lines in a few posts. But I don’t know if I can really agree.

Sure his 2023 was a bit down, but so was literally the whole team. But as it stands Stengle would likely be in the AA team this year, or at a minimum in the squad of 44. I’d say Holmes likely would be atm as well, but probably no one else. Now I know there’s a bit of projecting in that, and feel free to make claims for any other cats if you’d like.

But If we take the last three years as a whole, Stengle has had 2 AA quality seasons. The only other cat in that time to do this would be Stewart. So the argument we don’t want to overpay for a 2023 season is a little unfair imo. You could name half the team that fits into that category. And during the time he’s been at the club he’s been one of the most consistent on our list

I wouldn’t make that argument at all.

If you have watched the games this year, it is clear that Stengle has been our best and most important player.
Come on now Kenny.
TS has been great but I really don't think you can mount a strong case over Max Holmes, actually I don't think it. You can't.

But then we have to pay wood. I say we don't take him and use that money on stengle

In that scenario it would be more giving the money we would pay parfitt (if we kept him) to wood. Wood doesnt really affect stengle.

At his age 3 years would probably only net them band 4 or 5 (like the hawks got with smith).
Id expect any trade (to protect a band 1) to be a late pick like the dogs did with duryea.

Duncan has lost what speed he had, he is slow slow slow. Surely be his last year.
A perfect example of players wanting on for one/two more yrs, then out of their control the game plan/style moves ahead of them. Look at the crows Brodie Smith, he's flat lined this yr. Dixon from Port and Boak also from Port plus Walker from the crows have big decisions to make at the end of the season. And our own Tom Hawkins, god bless...has seen the plan and speed move past him.

Not breaking the bank over a player has helped the club with their SC management and also shows a commitment from the player that they buy into the system. If Stengles goes for a better deal I have no ill feelings towards him that’s life , small forwards are easier to replace than mids so all the best to him in his decision.

Yeah, fair point re: Max, he has been awesome.

I do tend to get swayed when I see players be very impactful at key moments in games, and that has been Stengle all over this season.

I also get influenced by forwards, and Stengle is the player that makes our forward line work. More so than Cameron or anyone else. As a non-key forward it is pretty amazing.

Let’s say max will be leading our b&f but Stengle has been most impactful (mvp?).

In addition, Geelong culture is highly respected + one of the reasons it's a desirable team for players. Add the Surf Coast, a cosmopolitan regional city, still close to Melbourne + more. Still, some players prefer city life.

I also understand Stengle's desire to be close to Betts + family, who have nurtured + supported him. I think people should consider his childhood: mother who died very young, absent father, he + siblings into care. Stengle conquering heavy adversities must be acknowledged.

Most would love Stengle to stay, but we'd wish him every success + happiness if he decides to leave. It's one of the qualities Geelong supporters give to former players. While some oppo team fans still boo former players.

Big disagree. Stengle is ranked 11th in the comp for goals, 1st for small forwards. He's going at 2.07 goals per game, on track for 50 goals.

Everyone had a meltdown when Ablett and Kelly left ..we will be fine if Stengles goes you can’t control everything after tax there is much difference between $750 k and $850 k so it’ll come down to more than just the actual salary as all big life decisions do .

The footage of how lazy Darcy has been at Frem since he signed his 7 year deal is pretty damning and a good example of a player getting a fat contract then going downhill...

It's not laziness, his knee is ****ed and he struggles to move. Which is why we don't want to have a bar of him on the long contract. Jackson / Darcy is Ottens / King on repeat. Freo will be begging someone to take him so they can play Jackson full time in the ruck where he is a significantly better player than up forward.

Would someone please explain to me the merits of recruiting Wood?

Umm he's a former Geelong Falcon so we can add another local to our squad?

Umm he can fill the wing role we've been sorely lacking since Smithy left

Umm he should not cost a lot to get?

Umm he's a mature enough body that he's not completely cooked while also not being not ready?

I'm literally trying to talk myself into it, i don't want to be a downer
