Ask and we'll try our best to assist - so here's 2024 Provisional AFL Draft Order

As normal, would like to acknowledge & thank Lore for creating this, keeping it up to date and making it available for all users on BF to use and keep track of the picks ahead of the upcoming draft





I'll also sticky this post to ensure it's easily accessible for discussion of our hypothetical trader

Injuries permitting, I think we're a great chance at top 4 again next year. I see a lot of upside and fairly limited downside.

If we have a good run with injuries the only real downsides could be a few older players declining ala Hawkins this year. But that should be offset by the youngsters coming through and developing.

He looked physically and mentally intimidated by his brother in THAT game, and whilst the relationship may have had something to do with it, I too see something that tells me he won't be a player that relishes the hard, physical contact.

To what extent the facial injury still plays on his mind is an unknown, and if it still does, it's a hurdle he must overcome.

Then again, the injury might have just exacerbated an existing reluctance, or lack of know how, to impose himself.

Either way, he doesn't seem to have as hard an edge as his brother. That isn't a criticism, just an observation.

I reckon he dominated until we tried to shoehorn the big dope Ratagolea into that backline. Seemed to lose all direction and had looked at sea and timid since. Having his face caved in around the same time didn't do much for his confidence either. But if he's seriously dropped the bottom lip and wants a trade (and not saying he is) because he wasn't picked for that prelim then good riddance. No-one is bigger than the team, just look what Max has done since his omission, used it as fuel and had improved year after year. That's the attitude and the fire he should be channelling imo

This, that Sav move, whilst inflating his trade value enough for Port to pay overs for him, did absolutely nothing for our rock solid 2022 premiership defense.

Don't know if it was or not, but his issue that night wasn't his skill in the ruck but his struggle to cope with the aggression that Tom threw at him.

Tom went at him hard, bullied him - as if he knew Sam was somehow vulnerable - and Sam appeared intimidated.

In fairness though Sam did regain some composure in the second half, but it was an interesting insight I thought.

I'd say though that the guys coming through from our VFL side this year stood out in the vfl last year. It was Dempsey, Neale, and draftees.

It wasn't a very reassuring start at all, but he did play better in the second half, and seemed a bit more purposeful thereafter.

Maybe his pride was stung?

I'm glad Sam bounced back a bit, but I'm still not sure that he has a hard streak of mongrel in him that his brother showed.

Maybe Tom knows that and it's why he went at Sam so hard, even though they're siblings / rivals and all that?

2025 will be an interesting watch.

Floyd B is one I have on my list. Seems like a very good match to the type of tall that our club likes

I'm not sure Guthrie will move the needle that much to be honest.

Yeah true, though I'm giving cos another year before I expect anything from him. Conway and Clark in my head are not new players just coming back in same as Guthrie.

Still feels like a net loss of depth.

I agree. Looks to have a fair bit of scope to improve with his athletic profile.

If he goes well at the combine then id say he would be one we would look at as a Blitz type replacement. Have no idea on his speed or stamina..but he rucks and kicks goals ..and looking at him , he looks agile.

It gets updated sporadically during the season, but with the season now over, the current draft order published this afternoon and trade stuff starting soon - I'll say within the next couple of days

I'm a big Sheldrick fan. We apparently wanted him when we moved up with the dogs a couple years ago but Swans took him before us.

I haven't watched him at all this year but liked him as good, thought he played well last year but never got a look in.

I'm skewed to your thinking as well, but CatToTheFuture has a point too that it might not happen immediately. It really does have to all click, and that's sometimes a work in progress.

As promising as our group is, they might be a 2026 or '27 proposition over '25.

Even Smith while not totally a kid, is still young enough to be seen as youth. He'd be a very, very, young man in any field outside of elite sport.

I've said for 18 months now that we feel like Sydney a few years ago. Phasing out the old guard while the youngsters take the reigns completely.

We're a better club than they are, but I could see us having a similar period to their little '20-22 era where we're crying foul about mental toughness or inconsistency, when really it's just the warts that come with a younger playing group.

2024 was inexusable for them though, they should be primed, and that's where I'd have us in 2027 or maybe 2028.

Big things are coming IMO, but we might have to wait another couple of years for the ultimate prize.

There's outliers of course, but as Pure_Ownage points out, we probably need our gun u-24 group to all reach that 24-29 sweetspot that premiership teams typically land in.

This is true, but our aged team needed the breaks- that is another of our issues- the oldies we rely on, Danger, Stanley, Blicavs, Duncan, even JC, can not back up 2 weeks of pressure finals footy any more.

In hindsight it’s probably better to keep playing.
Scott was asked this after the game and he went around the question a little bit and said “if we had an option to win or lose week 1 we obviously take the win” and didn’t really answer straight away about whether it’s good to have the extra week off.

I never thought I would say this but it might get to the point that you’re better off finishing outside of the 4 depending on your list.
Bucks had an article before the prelim and said that it’s not idea preparation for Geelong having the breaks.
It seemed ok for Sydney because let’s face it, they played a pretty ordinary port team in the prelim.

The pre finals bye is a disaster imo and completely takes away the advantage of finishing top 4 and winning week 1.

Anyway sorry I’m off topic here.

If they introduce multiple years of futures… I wonder how many R1 picks will it take to get H Reid. If we know of get told that he is interested when OOC..then agree if we can.. we best start saving our R1 picks

Whats the odds we can get any of Brayshaw or Butters as a FA. We do seem to target FA players in hig finishing teams… whcih means they get comp later in R1… ..seems like its a prelude to a match and trade.

Look I agree its easier if you pick FA from a bottom 6 club so they won't match eg ldu and balta next year wouldn't be matched. Its harder as top 6 clubs will match. That said I'm sure we will chase Brayshaw and a couple of others next year.

On Harley I'm sure his management will tell his chosen club 12 months out that he wants them so they have time to stockpile picks. If the afl loosens future trading rules then he's going to cost at least 3 R1s (unless one of our R1s was guaranteed to be top 5 that would be the cost) plus a good player. It will be painful one of the biggest trades in decades but likely worth it (if we pulled it off).

That is the operative point.
Our list is difficult with our dependence on Danger, Stanley, Stewart, (Duncan- hopefully that is to a lesser extent)Blicavs- these guys definitely NEED the 2 weeks off. Danger can not back up big games consecutively.
Finishing top 4 still saw 75% of the prelim teams there.
Until that balance changes, difficult to agree with you.
The other issue is Brisbane's road to September this year was far from ideal- several ACL's, multiple early season losses, but once they got going, they looked like the best team in the comp, more impressive than Swans, and so they might have finished 5th, but in all honesty, they were easily a top 2 or 3 team.

The issue they now have is that group now has a massive mark against them for being brittle in 2 out of the last 3 Grand Finals and there is no guarantee that they will get back there, let alone win one.

Sydneys 22-24 era might set them back further than people realise.
