If it's who I think it is, and we finish Top 8 again, would take two firsts and Brad Close at a minimum (given the SA factor).
Probably more than that.

Oh wow, now I'm excited.
I've mentioned it in the past hence the emoji. He's a local from here and a good mate still keeps in touch with him from their Jets days.

Port won't trade butters while he's in contract anyway have to wait until he's RFA.
They literally just traded Houston while contracted.

It's probably less than likely, unless he really makes things untenable, but to rule it out so quickly is disingenuous to the situation and the club we're dealing with.

The bigger question for me is whether Geelong commit to the heavy price tag attached, or if they'd rather chance their arm and wait a year until free agency.

Houston doesn't have half the leadership potential butters does. Different example.

On your other but I think Geelong would rather wait til 2026.

hope buckley is a better pundit than a coach then. :p

if is a boom recruit mid we looking at i hope they aim high like a matt rowell or zach butters.
He is actually a very smart person. If you hear him on SEN his insights into coaching is quite strong. Him and Ross Lyon (when he was media) are my two fav commentators due to the analytical insights they both highlighted.

I recall Buckley saying how Chris Scott was incredibly hard to coach against highlighting his organization behind the ball that he orchestrated. He was very big on having a +1 at all times roll back behind the play and he liked to set things up like a quarter back. That he made an emphasis on trying to nullify our +1 a lot and that Scott had many aces up his sleeve to orchestrate it.

Even if that was to be true, if a player is requesting to leave then "leadership potential" isn't at the forefront of any clubs mind. They're already asking to leave.

What's more likely to be a factor is where Port believe they are at as a club by the end of 2025.

If they challenge again, and see improvement in the list they'll likely hold Butters in the hope of going one better in '26, similar to us with Tim Kelly.

If they fall off a bit and conclude that a shift in philosophy for the club is required (particularly with a new coach being likely in this scenario) then it helps our cause.

The reality is when people higher up the chain (ie not ken) get involved leadership always matters. Which makes a leader like butters hard to extract and pushes up the price.

I do agree where they are in the window (or where they think they are) influenced what they will do but either way there's very little chance they will willingly trade him under contract and if they did the price would be too high for it to be worth us considering. As a free agent that's a different issue.

What key forward can we get? Limited on the market

That was basically my point. You might as well get a top line mid which can be done more easily than trading for a kpf where you can't get the same quality and you have to pay overs if you do.

It would take something nuclear one would think or an offer to good to refuse. I prefer for us to look at OOC…then even with recalcitrant clubs like with Smith ..a deal gets done. Of course RFA can still be matched but at least he is OOC.

He would be the perfect fit in my opinion. Happy to keep North honest in their offer to him even if we're not seriously being considered

If he stays at North then good luck to him , Id admire the loyalty to stay at a club that has been poor in his time there. 108 games for 21 wins. Probably get offered a heap to go and to stay.
