Theres talk about Gia being our next captain at our beloved club.
To me i don't think he would make a great captain.. Club man yes.. But captain, im not too sure..

I just see how the Hawks appointed Vanderberg as a captain but clearly they have 10 or so better players that could lead their club..

Think it epitomises how few good players we have in the 24-27 year old age bracket. Providing Johnno retires in 2-3 years its logical that somebody around that age will be our next captain as clubs are loathe to burden a 23-24 year old with the duties but we might have to.

As for me, he has too many deficiencies in his game to be captain regardless of how highly he is thought about around the club. He is an absolute liability when the opposition have the ball (gets his hands on opponents for a few tackles each game but I cannot recall one instance where he actually stops an opponent getting an effective disposal away in the tackle).

Body language on the field is a disgrace, forever standing with hands on hips like a smaller version of Anthony Rocca fitness wise.

The only 2 options I can think of are Cross and Murphy. Whilst I admire Boyd's tenacity, you cannot have a clanger king as captain (unless you're Richmond with Kane Johnson and thats working well for them at the moment)

You must not rate Robert Harvey then. He has spent the last 20 years doing the same thing!!!

Griffen should be the next captain

Based on what? He was pretty poor before he got injured and he really was inept in the midfield. I know he was nursed through the preseason which might explain his poor form and I know he has all the right attributes but currently I think the title of the next captain is a bit premature.

I brought this topic up after the Brisbane game pre season and everybody shot me down! Gia's attack on the ball was poor that night and nothing has changed. Not consistent enough to be captain!

How people change!

This is what I wrote!

Re: Forward line - Doogs March 2007
I think the main problem is that Gia was captain. If someone else was captain then Doogs would have been much better. Gia should never be captain of the Western Bulldogs ever ever ever because we lost and it was all his fault.

He is to worried about his tan and trying to look good for the cameras!!

I have no doubt the boy has skill but he has no heart!! Three times Last night he was worried about physical attention during a marking contest, it's unacceptable. To duck your head in a game of football is the ultimate sin when someone is coming to spoil from behind. No matter what grade of football you play it sends a terrible message to your team mates and your supporters!!

Gia is great when the teams firing and he gets given the ball on a silver platter!!

He should never ever captain the Western Bulldogs Football Club!!!!

Like who? Who has changed their opinion. I thought that thread was a joke then, and still is now. If Gia has all the necessary leadership capabilities then i say give it to him, if the rest of the team listens and respects him, then he's the guy. I don't know who it should be, I'm not privy to the pre-game, quarter time, half time, pre-season, end of game, Sunday warm down, mad Monday, Christmas fest pep talks. I have no idea who would be the best next captain. I think Vandenburg has proved you don't have to be the best in the team to be the right man for the job.

Gia knows he has had a poor season, but everyone always harps on about how hard he trains and how keen is around the club, i'm sure he'll work through it. And i'm not even a big Gia fan! But i don't think we have a right questioning their leadership capabilities with out knowing the full information. Threatening to not sign your membership forms if Gia is the next captain(as one poster has already said in another thread) is bullocks!

Gia may be a great leader off the field. But the simple reason he cannot be captain is that leaders set the example. Do we want our team following his example?

Vandenburg is hard at it, crunches people, people he tackles stay tackled, does the 1 percenters, gut runs, etc. It's not just him, look at the good clubs...Buckley, Riccuito, Judd, Harley...

Gia's mode of playing (and I am not saying he is a bad player) is not the standard we want to set on field.

Johnson may be poor defensively, but the courage he displays flying in contested marking against bigger bodies, getting crunched year on year, massive heart.

Who else is in the leadership group apart from Johnno and Gia?

Because I'd say most of the others have shown far less in terms of leadership this year.

A real leader can lay a tackle in the forward line and not fall to the ground and stay on his knees while the opposition runs it out in droves, only to decide to jog to the fifty and put his hands on his head when they slot through yet another. I watched this so called leader very closely today and his application is abysmal, his impact laughable and his leadership down right invisible.

Gia reminds me of Vandeberg, good leader off field but doesn't show much on the field. Is it just me or what about Boyd as our next captain, he has certainly been our best this year and has shown his toughness. Kept fighting strong in many of our beltings, but I think is sometimes overshawdowed by West, Cross and Cooney. His work effort is second too none this year, hope he wins our BF and gets some respect from the media and players which I think he doesn't get.

Am so sick of seeing players break Gia's tackles. Gee Hird is a thin build and offensive minded but that bastard laid great tackles. Unfair to mention Hird and Gia in the same breath but hey we are talking captains (was it Hird who was captain when the Bombers won their most recent GF? Was it Hird who won the Norm?)

Giansiracusa shouldn't be our next captain. Sure he may work hard and be a leader off the field, but I much prefer a leadership group of Cross (captain), with Murphy and Boyd as the Vice Captains. Each of them work hard, are consistent, have a go and are outstanding players.

I was always a Gia fan but after this season I do not know if I can maintain my confidence in him. As far as being captain, I would not be surprised if he will be playing elsewhere by then. I think we are struggling to find a potential captain to be honest. Perhaps Mitch.

If you want someone who exemplifies what how want our blokes tp play, there are only two applicants...Cross and Boyd. Hahn needs to get on the field first.

Your captain has to lead by example.

Enough said

Gia never to captain. Lucky to be on our list at the start of the 2008 season, if he is!

He needs to have a freakin good look at himself. Ordinary attack on the footy. Likes the soft option and I have never seen him put his body on the line.

Unlike a few other's I believe Gia does put his body on the line, he puts his head over the ball and is willing to cop the hit.

But, his biggest problem is his workrate, or the lack of it. On 3AW yesterday Tony Shaw questioned Gia's fitness during the call. He is on the money with that. Gia looks unfit.

He doesn't get to enough contests, doesn't gut run. Continually has his hands on his head trying to suck in air after just a small amount of running. Not good enough. The game is all about running now and if you can't do it, you shouldn't be playing.

At best Gia should play as a permanant forward pocket, is that enough?

I want to beleive in him, I really do.

As much as i would love to see Grif captain because he is my fav player, i can see cross being a very good captain... Needs to work on his kicking but as a leader i think he can lift the team..
We did miss him this year when he went down.. Very important player in my eyes..
