Don't get me wrong Glen Archer is a fantastic player. Courages, commited and hard at it which we all can admire. But to me, i can't put him even close to the same catagory as Hird,Buckley, harvey. Some of you may be thinking otherwise but to me he has just been a good servant to the game and not a 'champion'. Allthough it may be hard to compare him to the great midifielders like hird buckley and harvs since archer is a defender, imo i just dont see what makes him such a legend of the game regardless of his position.

He is a champion. Not just for his feats on the field, but also what he has done off it. On the field though, you cant compare him to guys like Hird, Buckley and Harvey. Arch is a defender, and he has never had a bucketload of possies. He isnt silky smooth and doesnt have the greatest of skills. But he always gives 110%, he put his body on the line and in the prime of his career he was very rarely beaten.

Over my time of watching North, Arch has close to the best foot skills on both sides of his body I've seen at the club. It's just his courage and hardness seem to overshadow the fact he very rarely misses a target with either foot, and the fact he isn't flashy. One of the best marks for his size - pre hand injury - I've ever seen, too.

I probably didnt word that properly. What I meant was guys like Hird, Voss etc just seem to have all the time in the world and can make the seemingly impossible happen. Archer doesnt have this quality. Mind you he is still an absolute champ. He is one of the guys I respect most in the whole AFL.

He is one of the greatest defenders we have seen (certainly in the modern era) and he has the almost unique ability to lift his team through his actions in defence.

He has played on and beaten all sizes despite being smaller than most midfielders.

His skills have meant his delivery out of the back line has been perfect and I can't think of one situation where he he lost a contested loose ball (soft rule changes allowing).

He has performed on the biggest day, peformed when the team was at it's lowest point, performed through injury and all the time led from the front.

He is highly effective, insanely couragous, beautifully skilled and massively inspring and he has been for 299 games.

His example will/has shaped the next generation of North Melbourne footballers.

He is romanticised because he is unique.

Archer is exactly what the word champion describes.

great player for his time, he knew what his job was and he did it as well as anyone has, but anyone that thinks he was the most skillfull footballer going around are kidding themselves.

I'd say that Archer doesn't have the skill/natural ability of Hird/Buckley etc. He has had just a big an effect on the outcome of games as them though.

He's a highly romanticised player, let's put it that way.

Only a person with no culture would believe that - you reckon his over rated. Never has a player been so over rated as your sniper Coach since his retirement. On any measure of hardness Archer is a superior player than Worsfold - and Woosha would be the first to admit it

Whats it matter which team he goes for or who their coach is? He's still right.

I don't really see the relevance of John Worsfold here, you'd struggle to find an Eagles fan (or anyone) who considers him to be comparable to the dead set champions of his era.

Being a hard man doesn't make you an out and out champion like what Glenn Archer is constantly portrayed, he's a North Melbourne champion, akin to someone like Nathan Burke at St. Kilda, or Dean Kemp at West Coast. A long serving, excellent player who was a top bloke and played some great footy but ultimately were never considered to be one of the best 5 or so players in the league at any one time.

So with that opinion in mind, I consider him to be a highly romanticised player.

Overrated.........most definetly.
Legend of the NMFC. No doubting that but his output over many years has not reached the level that the plaudits have.
If Glenn Archer is a true champion of the game then that would make Gavin Brown a legend.
Equally as courageous as Archer.
One of the best wingmen of his time.
Played CHF in a premiership team and more than held his own in the postion.
And was more than a competent defender in his later years.

This has all to do with Archer the footballer as opossed to the man.
As a person and an ambassador of the game, there have been few men as impressive as him.
Wish him all the best this week and whatever he does after retirement.
*******.com ;))

Archer is an over-glorified back pocket who struggles playing modern day footy and only made 300 games because he has had a good run with injuries and of recent times has played in a struggling side

The most overrated in the game. Good to average player and very undisciplined.
