GOLD Coast has signed its first players, with three Queensland 17-year-olds committing to the GC 17 bid to join the AFL in 2011.
Charlie Dixon, from Cairns, and Jesse Haberfield and Jack Stanlake, from the Gold Coast, will opt out of the NAB AFL Draft and will be eligible to play in the Gold Coast's TAC Cup side next year and the VFL in 2010.
“This is a very important milestone and in years to come we will be able to look back and say these guys were the foundations of the building of the Gold Coast Football Club," GC 17 chairman John Witheriff said on Tuesday
"I’d like to thank Jesse, Charlie and Jack for agreeing to join us on the journey to become the most exciting sporting club in Australia.
“We still have a long way to go, however community support is growing and we believe the Gold Coast is telling us they want this team.
"Now we have players who are telling us they want to play for us so we are confident we are on the right track.”
AFL Queensland CEO Richard Griffiths said the AFL felt it was vital the new team had access to home-grown Queensland talent, and the potential to build that talent into a playing list through an extended playing and development program.
The AFL announced last month GC 17 would be able to pre-sign up to 20 Queensland players of draft eligible age in 2009 and 2010.
Contract offers for the Queensland-based players who opt out of the draft and sign with GC 17 are in line with payments made to national draft players in their initial contract terms.
The player contracts will become void if the GC17 team does not meet the criteria set down by the AFL Commission and is not granted the 17th licence in early October. The players will then be eligible for the AFL Draft in November.

That's very intelligent of the AFL; no club, no name, and yet they're already signing players.

Nothing wrong with this...They need to build and keep interest high in the team right up until 2011. And with the turmoil the NRL is about to find itself in (some reports say the top 20 players could be on their way out in the next couple of years)...the AFL (and GC17) will be licking their chops.

Welcome aboard young fellows. You've shown guts and grit. Right, now for another worthy 17 lads upon the good ship Gold Coast. Hopefully, Marlins one and all. :thumbsu:

Take a deep breath dude.

The AFL *has* decided on draft concessions ... those concessions being that the club can take 20 QLD teenagers between now and 2010.

A good start , 3 good young players , 2 other players they are in talks with are Broadbeachs Adam McKenzie and Southports Brad Salmon.
