Hi,

During the bleak days of covid I put together a list of things I wanted to do. Hobbies for me were really sport based. But with so many hours available during the lock ups. I watched a lot of gold prospecting shows.

Now all these years later I met a lass and unbelievably her father is sitting on a gold mine in Yandoit. Well a disused gold mine. I would venture and down to the creek for a beer and I suppose just to 'be'. But I had this nagging feeling that there was gold in the creek.

Well 20 metres behind the creek is a mullock heap. They pulled 9kgs out of it back in the day before they hit water and it flooded.
The part of the creek on this property ( no else can access it ) that I pan, is lava flow from Mt Franklin.

I will post some pics at some stage I'm about to head off now.

I've got around 3 grams of gold so far. Considering I don't do it that often it's going ok.

Anyways enough of that , any tips , ideas or experiences anyone had , please share.

I have watched a fair few of those shows too. I’d buy a metal detector, try to set up a small sluice of some kind. Look for natural dips in the creek or something that diverts the water flow and get the dirt from there.

I really have no idea but it appeals to me.

My brother was right into gold prospecting, panning and with a metal detector. He found a nugget that was a couple of ounces and wouldn't shut up about. He was talking about this secret spot he found and refused to tell anyone where it was.
He would camp out there for a few weeks at a time, on occasion he was setting up camp and tripped on a tie down and unfortunately his shin went in two separate directions. Shattered in a dozen or so places, bone fragments were splintered off all over the place. It was unlucky he was in a pretty remote spot and it took hours to get to the nearest hospital. I believe the surgery last 12 hours or so and he still walks with a limp several years later.

I don't believe he has been back since actually.

Panning and metal detecting for gold is fun.

I knew a mate that went panning for gold along a river in Beechworth. Unfortunately he got bitten by a brown snake and died shortly afterwards. The snake also ate all the gold he collected that day.

The snake apparently now lays golden eggs.

Day 1 Dinkers 1 - Mother nature 0

I had in the past been troubled by leeches, so picked up a wetsuit, and those critters were ****ed. There is a couple of deep holes I like to explore, well deep for me. No leeches or they just gave up and fell off.

And late on day one I venture back to the little hole I had found glory in before, and the glory from the hole continued, probably improved. I want to name the hole, but can't think of, well, a name.

The hole below and I would have pulled half a gram out of it.

Day 2

Mother nature 3 - Dinkers 1

WAs feeling very confident after a late session of gold finding day 1, strode to the wicket feeling very confident. Should have gone home when that hornet bite my face ( yes smashing ones leg does win). Then I decided it ws too hot for the wetsuit, well I rolled it down, the leeches seized their moment and struck, along with the bull ants.

So I ventured off for a wander and sat my boney arse on a rock while enjoying a beer, don't know why I didi it but i started digging out some soil, and panned it.

Below is the first pan there's a few specs

And 2 hours later I'd cleaned it out and got a gram of gold.

As others have stated I have nfi and run on pot luck. I have taken 3/4 grams of gold from 2 places. Below is some more pics of the land .

The mullock heap which is has a road cut in so the size is distorted.

The place goes on for about a km, well that has the volcanic rock, my mind races at the possibilities and I do need advice on where to look. I know there has been huge flooding in this area and that is what carries the gold. I also have been told to keep moving out until the gold runs out which some say will show me where the source is.

Anyway it's a lot of fun and get into it.
