Actually I believe it might be the 2nd official apology in a final we have received.
That 2012 prelim one was the closest I’ve ever coming to punching a tv.
Haha

what was the other one mate?

if anyone remembers the 98 semi vs Swans we were being SLAUGHTERED in the first half around 18 frees to 5 at one point with many of the softest most laughable frees of all time (going back here but my perhaps somewhat autistic brain just remembers numbers)

.

I don’t think good teams will follow this lead as they will back in their game plan to win, that will open up some more flow for us.

Pretty much. This game will get written off as a shit team ambushing, and nearly succeeding in taking out an improving team.

After all, no one followed our lead on how to beat Melbourne in '21.

Really good, balanced post. :thumbsu:
("Keays was poor today" is so much fairer than condemning him as "absolute garbage" :thumbsu:. Have you mellowed, BC? :sneaky:)
I think what pissed me off the most about yesterdays game, and there was plenty to piss me off about it mind you, was the fact that we seem to have Murphy and Keays in the team to provide “forward pressure”. Thats their role.

we have pedlar, rankine and rach as our mercurial small forward types that are there to hit the scoreboard and do the freakish things (plus rotate through the midfield) and murph and keays to do mostly grunt work and pressure the hell out of the opposition when the ball is in our forward line and not let the opposition get it out.

so to see Jarman Impey at HB for the hawks run around, and out of, our forward line ALL day like an unregistered dog was infuriating.

surely at some point murph or keays has to say to themselves.. “thats my role to stop that bloke… i’ve gotta smother the hell out of him, wear him like a glove”

but neither did.

I get the feeling both murph and keays think they are mercurial types too.

they are not.

So if they are going to ignore an opponent(s) that are killing us running it freely out of our forward line, if they are going to miss dozens of tackles or tackle in manner that is easily broken and they are going to ignore the “forward pressure“ role they are assigned… then they can both fxxk off and be replaced by guys that will.

I’m possibly imagining it, can’t find anything on google, I alway had it in my mind there were two apologies.

Well at least we have collingwood next and they don’t have anyone good off half back

Good:
Winning a game when we are down by 2 goals with 3 minutes left.
Winning at Launceston is hard, really hard. Like Geelong in Geelong hard. That was a better win that it looked.
We were outworked by Hawthorn who came with an effective gameplan to destroy the game, they were excellent in close and didnt enable us to get any good outside ball.

Bad:
Lots of players didn't have a great game, not sure why but we love playing "skyball" when under pressure. Skyball was invented by Matt Crouch where the ball travels 100M in the air and 13M toward the goal, in Geelong it floats out of bounds on the full.

Ugly:
Playing in Launceston, then playing in Geelong, then playing in Ballarat, then playing in Darwin before we even set foot in Melbourne.
Surprised we weren't given St Kilda in Cairns.

Agreed - just watched the replay, we weren't anywhere near as bad some were making out in this and the game day thread.

The morning after … having been at the game, then watched the replay - it didn’t look a bad game on TV.

At the ground I missed some of the close in stuff and was probably harsh on our mids and ROB.

Actually fought it out well and got the points.

3 big weeks ahead, we will be glad to have a few wins in the bank!!

Whole post was food for thought :thumbsu:, for me. I wasn't going to watch the replay, but I think after your post I will.
I noticed one of their blokes breaking the HB line and rebounding strongly. Was that Impey?

1) There's a possibility Murphy and Keays had other roles to play; we don't know.
if neither Murphy nor Keays spotted Impey's influence, isn't it up to Nicks to point that out and get one of them (hard-running Keays would be my pick) to clamp down on him?
2) I agree that they are not, but have no clue what they're thinking.
My criticism of Keays (apart from no-R-foot) is that he's very "busy", even when he doesn't need to be. I've seen signs over the last 2-maybe-3 weeks that he's finally learning to give off when he's not in a great position and not try to snap superstar goals from poor positions eg his handball to Jones early in the Carlton game (resulted in Rankine goal), his handball to Rankine late in the last.
Rankine was deeper in the pocket but much more likely to kick the freak goal, which he did.

They highlighted a great bit of captaincy from Dawson on First Crack last night using the behind the goal cameras. Straight after Fog kicks his last goal and we have lost the ball in our F50, Dawson is immediately marshaling the team to push back and get into defensive structures. Laird even pushes back into D50 to help cover.

He actually stood there for a few seconds to make sure the team was organised and then pushed back as the Hawks moved the ball into their F50 in the last 30 seconds. Great bit of captaincy and great bit of coaching, as you can see Nicks at the same time telling VB to not get on the phone for instructions and instead let the players sort themselves out, which they did. Any lapse in concentration there and the Hawks potentially get their shot on goal, but we congested their F50 up and made it very hard to get a shot away.

King said it reminded him of what Pendlebury was doing at Collingwood last year. Always remains calm and composed and can basically act as an extra coach in those pressure situations.

There was a few plays on the wing and through the middle where Rankine just steals the ball from a player when he had no right to and kept the ball moving forward.

Just little things, but makes me think that perhaps we could have had him spend more time higher up the ground.

I realise that him being in the forward line was a key reason we won the game, but I don't think we seen anywhere near his true potential.

I hope throughout the year that we experiment with this more.

At the moment Rachelle is rotating with Soligo and Rankine is pretty much permanent forward.

I think Soligo more permanent midfield and Rachelle rotating with Rankine would be a good experiment.

Agree !

Rankine can extract or just make the ball fall out way to a teammate as his footy IQ is so more advanced than anyone out there

Definitely keen to see more squirts around the ball with his smarts , pressure and running power

Tough 5 rounds coming up! Could be entrenched in the bottom 8 again after that.
For sure draw looks scary

But alot of people thought we’d be 2-4 by now and prob worse after first week of season where we coughed one up

And playing teams like hawthorn away can be trickier than higher rated teams at home

If we could win at least 2 of these 5 we are holding up pretty well

Test will come in winter with fatigue and injuries

Hope our sanfl guys can perform better than they did this week to maintain pressure

His hands in close are ridiculous. He sees passes by the opposition and can intercept them and take possession.

Wouldn't surprise me if he played high level basketball.

Agreed. Watch the last 20 seconds specifically. Spoils an incoming ball and then immediately recovers to smother a kick at goal.

then the very last play before ball up, Max bravely leads his opponent forward burrowing the ball forward to Murray who collects one grab and plays it perfectly taking the big hit and going straight to ground.

Murray brilliant last minute and thankfully is all we could have asked for from Mc Asey so we have dodged a bucket in terms of like for like but yes we all could have had Serong or Day instead - I get it
I’d have Murray top 5 in B and F if not top 3 currently

Watch his last ball take where he immediately takes it cleanly amongst the bedlum and actually takes steps toward the tackler to make sure it ends up a ball up rather than a rushed possession with a few secs to go

Can’t buy that kind of composure and execution from a young player

Rendell says some ridiculous stuff but when he predicted Murray a chance to be an AA in pre season I actually nodded to myself .. good call

Sometimes it’s a handball and sometimes a tap on , you’d love to be next to him as you know he will serve it up on a platter then you’re off to the races

It’s a level of smarts above anyone else out there

Worth every cent , the people that got negative re him coming will stay v quiet

I always thought the thing that would let Murray down that he wouldn't be able to fix was his brain fades.

Have not seen any of these cases fades this year at all.

I always thought he had the athleticism and skills to be a great defender, but now that he's eliminated the poor decision making, he's become a serious footballer.

Butts still looks very slow to me, he looks to be carrying extra weight this year.

Butts looks like a battling 30 yo amateur footballer in comparison

Trying his guts out though
