Saw it in play late in the game. Rachele marks it at HF, has 20-25m free, plenty of space to run to 50-45m out for a running shot and goal. Instead he stops, goes back and tries to slow it down. You could tell it went against his natural instincts, but he's got a coach in his head yelling at him for daring to attack.
There was nothing to kick to. It was just a sea of Geelong players.

If ever they were going to show something, to prove a point, to make a statement, tonight was the night to do it.

Nicks re-signed until end 2026. Great chance to show faith in him and execute his plans/strategy (I was snorting with scorn while I was typing that, btw).
Dry deck, home ground.
Geelong depleted.

What an opportunity! What a way to make a statement and inspire supporters. Pathetic.

Was just a mistake riddled game from us, regardless of what happened with Stewart. Any periods of play that we moved the ball well, our finishing was horrid (either in front of goal, crap kicks inside 50 to uncontested targets or missing marks).
We kept spoiling teammates .....running into them ....our own guy, nearly knocked out Dawson

I've never seen so many incidences of teammate confusion for many a year

There's obviously been a reason why Pedlar has lined up in the B's for Match Sims
Yeah because we hate players that show anything resembling talent or taking the game on

Just another game where you think we might pinch this , though deep down, after years of disappointment , you knew we'd get rollled.

Tonight it was shots at goal , unforgivable. ( and midfield and ... ).

The Good - It's the younger players keeeping us in the game.

Bad and Ugly - relying on the kids to carry the team.

It was amateur hour ......and made a mockery of all the pre-season garble

"We were able to train with footballs, and hone our skills"

1. Well, there was only one side one grabbing the ball tonight
2. There was only one side that continued to slip over
3. There was only one side, whose players didn't keep spoiling and running into teammates
4. And there was only one side who moved the ball quicker than treakle
5. And there was only one side, whose head wasn't big enough to drink their own bath water ....and believe they were destined for Finals

AND IT WASN'T THE CROWS !

Crouch got 39 possessions, but back to his old ways ....slowing us down ...we are a worse midfield with him in it .....and either he or Laird has to go

Smith ....WOW, how bad can a player play

Berry ....or should I say fumbles Berry ....how many turnovers did he present to GEEL

Hinge ....forget the possession count ...he was caught in no-man's land defending time & time again .....another bath water drinker

ROB ....again not marking anything ....you simply cannot rely on his output

Fogarty ....another who clearly demonstrated his inability to focus on the game for 100 min

NICKS
In what world does any coach allow Tom Stewart to run around like an unregistered dog ....game losing move #1

In what world do you have your Captain tagging a 34 YO Danger ....he was never going to tear us a new one ....and we lost all drive from Dawson, our most direct MID ....game losing move #2

Congratulations on manning Stewart up in the last 10 min of the game .....just WOW !

There's no words to describe how bad that coaching performance was tonight
Crouch was easily our best player, horrible take. Only one to show any composure.

Exactly.

Long season, lots to play out but damn, not a good sign.

Talent, I agree .....but sometimes players are not focussed on their footy, for a variety of reasons

Surely this is all about the midfield? We have seemingly ignored bringing in any A grade talent in this area and M crouch clearly being our best mod is a disaster. (Nothing against Crouch he has been great since being back).

Who is a best young mid? I have zero confidence we have anyone on the list that could even be considered a future A grade afl mid.
Soligo is our best exciting mid and he plays wing

I'm not sure Chris Scott even broke a sweat that match. That was like watching a grandmaster play an amatuer at chess. Just picked apart our "tactics" and had 90% of the match on their own terms.

Worst part is, it happened the entire game.

First quarter is was obvious - fair enough, it happens - so we should make tactical changes at quarter time to address it, right?

Right?

Dawson on Murphy: "I hope he has another 100 in him"

team america vomit GIF

We play Geelong again away in round 21.

If Tom Stewart takes 1 intercept mark Nicks should be instantly sacked if he isn't already by that point

Should have just given Murphy license revert to his old ways of flying for pack marks one on one with Stewart. It's not like we would have sacrificed anything else Murphy offered.

The one small mercy for the night was Stewart dropped that screamer over Pedlar.

Crouch was easily our best player, horrible take. Only one to show any composure.
It's not all about possessions .....that's never been Crouch's problem

It's about speed of ball movement ....and tonight Crouch slowed the side down, like he has so many times B4 .....to the point, the club refused to play him, despite all his possessions

6 years out of finals and our midfield is Matt Crouch, Rory Laird, Jordan Dawson and Rey O'Brien.
This is mostly what is doing my head in. We should have a group of young mids who have been learning their trade and ready to soon boom.

I stopped watching with a little over 2 mins to play, after Keays gave away the unnecessary htm free, 30m out from our goal..

In hindsight, I coulda stopped at 3/4 time because if I had, I'd have missed:
--- more of Crows players running into/ spoiling each other
--- more dropped marks, more fumbles, more panic
--- more clueless delivery eg Fog outnumbered 2-to-1? OK, kick it in high. Tex on a lead with no-one around him? Kick it 30 metres past him, to NO-ONE, just space.
--- more kicks ootf and not under pressure, either.
--- more of the same disorganised-rabble-garbage they put up last week.

Now, I'm just sitting, tv off, shaking my head, disappointed again.

Two games in a row where the game plan was absolutely not conducive to winning, and even more worrying is playing exactly to the opposition strengths. Absolutely baffling stuff and have gone backwards to last year. I've had patience with this coaching team, acknowledging a few games in the last two years that I chalked down to inexperience... but wow...it's not looking good if this (high possession, slow, straight line football by players who aren't renown for their kicking skills..) is the best we have come up with.

Geelong is such an admirably professional group, which can be seen in their extremely team based and disciplined defense; you kind of hope seeing that first hand was a total wake up to the coaching staff of what true game plans and tactical coaching is about but....

Smith played the worst individual game I've seen by a crows player since Hampton. Atrocious. Needed to be done a year ago.

Desperately need to trade in defensive players who want to do more than kick to a contest down the line.

He went at nearly 90% DE in a game we couldn't hit a barn door at ten paces. Maybe a few more need to slow it down. Speed is all good but if you kick it to the oppos best defender every time what is the point?
