Do you believe the club would do such a thing?

Re: Harbrow?

Ok, I'll be serious this time.

Your assumption that a virus is strictly one week is usually true, if it's just a cold. However if it's something that gets down into the lungs (eg bronchitis) you can be feeling sort of OK after a few days but still have lots of crap to get out of your lungs and that can take days or even weeks. Then of course if it's a flu virus he'd definitely be out for at least two weeks.

The reality is that "virus" is a bit like "general soreness". It's often used as a cover for the real reason for omitting a player. There are several reasons for doing that. One is that if you want to rest a player late in the season so he's refreshed for the finals you don't want to say "Hall is rested" because it shows contempt for the opposition and might just fire them up. Also you look pretty stupid if you then lose the match.

Another reason - and probably the one with Harbrow since he was apparently seen in the rooms last week when he was supposed to have a virus - is that they don't want to publicise his real ailment in case the opposition takes advantage of it or targets it (eg crook shoulder).

There was a suggestion on this board that Harbrow might have been OK for this week but then copped a corky at training. That's also possible.

However I note that Higgins is also out with a "virus" this week. Who knows whether it's real or not but maybe there is one doing the rounds at the club?

I think it's far less likely that Harbrow's been stood down for punitive reasons even if he has fessed up to signing with GC Suns. If we were no chance of making the finals maybe it'd be time to blood some youngsters but the chance of a premiership would surely mean Eade would want to play his best side come finals time.

And Harbrow's offence (if there is one) is nothing like Aker's. If rumours of the money GC can offer are correct, and considering all his personal attachments to life in Qld, nobody could really blame him.

Re: Harbrow?

Dogs official facebook has come out and said it is a corkie he copped at training, to clear up any speculation.

On channel 10 at half time though, the guy from the hun said the club has conceded he is gone to the goldcoast.:(

hope he's wrong.

Re: Harbrow?

Ha, do you think Geel will stand down Ablett for the finals? Don't think so.

2010 is 2010 and next year is next year. I'm tipping Harbrow is waiting for the end of the season to decide. If he wants to increase his value he'd be crazy not to wait until after the finals.

Re: Harbrow?

Its interested/frustrating with all this Gold Coast talk.

Talk has increased once again today that Krakouer is going from Port,

Jasper Pittard was pulled out from his SANFL Game today 15 minutes before the bounce, and one can assume he may come in tomorrow for Krak. Interesting how clubs would act I guess.

Re: Harbrow?

Harbrow not playing because he has signed for GC is simply not true. Eade has probably been the only coach with the philisophical view that if you are likely to lose a player next year you don't really want to lose them for this year also. Eade has handled this situation much better than some of his counterparts (especially from Sleepy Hollow). Harbrow has to be either injured or ill to not play this week.

Re: Harbrow?

From my point of view it seems the Club has been and may continue to be doing everything it can in keeping J.Harbrow.

It seems and from what I have heard he loves the club, players, coaching staff but his girlfriend and him are finding it hard to live in Melbourne and have family in QLD and moving to Brisbane is a big factor and one that may ultimately see him go to GC17.

Why and should the Dogs consider doing a deal with the Lions for a ready made type player? Obviously Jarrod must aggree but if location is paramount to him it maybe worth throwing up to him.

Hope he stays.

Re: Harbrow?

John Ralph said that he and Nathan Krakouer were 100% over the line to go to the Gold Coast. If this is true it's very sad as I don't think he's even reached his peak yet.

There are about 10 other players I'd rather lose before him.

Re: Harbrow?

off topic a bit, but doesn't surprise Krakour being linked to GC either - Clayton was keen to nab him couple of years back in the draft (where we took Everitt with our first pick)

No.

Is he going to help us win a flag? Yes.
Would the Club jeopardize that by not playing him? No.

Re: Harbrow?

I love Harbrow at the Dogs, but am not shattered if he goes. Nor should the club be.

He has his girl and family up there, and as a young player will probably get a good 8-10 year career at a club that is starting from scratch. What an experience, can we blame him?

He ought to play his guts out for us this year, we wish him well next year, and life will go on.

Re: Harbrow?

Interesting concept. Could it happen - YES. Is it happening now - Probably not.

One of the greatest coaches in Rugby League history and a man recognised as one of the best thinkers in sport, Wayne Bennett had this conundrum mid way through 2001 with the Brisbane Broncos. One of the most exciting young players at the time, Justin Hodges, signed a deal with the Roosters, Bennett's reaction, dropped never to play again that season. Now at the time (memory serves me correct) the Broncos where on top of the ladder, the ended up coming 5th (although made the preliminary final).

Was it the correct move, debate will always reign about that. Put the team before the player, play the best team despite possible consequences. Only inner sanctum people at the Doggies would know if a player already signing is deemed a distraction. We did get rid of another distraction recently, one that many reckon would have helped us to and win a GF!

Hodges has gone on to be one of the better Centres in the game and in a strange twist, after three years with the Roosters, made up with Bennett and is now back with the Broncos.

And my opinion, has he signed, unfortunately, yes, I thing Harbrow has gone. Do I want him to keep playing, Yes I do.

Re: Harbrow?

I dont think he has signed but I do think he has made up his mind. ATM there is no difference

Should this make a difference how he is viewed?

I dont think he has signed during the so called window of opportunity because I really think, had his domestic circumstances been different he would have stayed. I think he was torn between the Dogs and GC17 and he never signed with either but he has since made up his mind.

Re: Harbrow?

I also think he's gone. We might as well make the best of a bad situation and hope that he's on enough money to net us two first rounders as compensation.
I worry that if he signed early in the year his value may have been less than if he signs at the end of this year.

Re: Harbrow?

Wood, Tutt and howard will cover the loss.

I don't think it will work like that. Harbrow has experience at AFL level, something Howard and Tutt don't have. You can't expect both or one of these guys to step in next year and be a superstar. Tutt needs to still put on a lot of muscle and Howard has been injured most of this year. I think these guys will take longer than expected. They will probably get games next season if Harbrow leaves but they wont be of the same quality at such an early stage.

They will probably cover the loss in 2-3 years but not in the immediate future IMO.

Harbrow must go

Ok the loss of harbrow will be massive, but here is my reason why I think he needs to go.

I have said in the past that I think that we need to take the man utd approach to list management, they are not afraid to let stars go, that save money to get others in to cover other spots better, this turn over keeps them having winning teams year in year out.

This can be done in the AFL, ATM our cap is at it's limits and with so many young guns coming through, it not gonna make it any easier.

So the loss of harbrow will help this and allow us to cover other areas better, just like man utd do.

1 our back 6 looks set and with wood getting better each week, makes this easier.

2 this years draft we will pick up libber and wallis, we are adding two more young guns for nothing really, it has worked out great timing with GC coming in.

3 the two rd 1 draft picks we get for loading harbrow, if we use this picks wisely we could do very well from this, we just need to use them at the right time

4 the money saved that we would have to pay him in years to come, will help keep other key players.

I really think we are sitting the best with the Suns coming in next year, not only are we pushing for a premiership this year, the fact we have drafted well over the past few year, also be able to pick up libber and wallis with such low pick is a bonus, then on top we get to add 2 rd 1 draft pick in years to come, with the loss of harbrow.

Re: Harbrow must go

Harbrow is G O N E. You can put your house on it.
It wont happen, but Eade should keep playing Wood over Harbrow just to teach Harbrow a lesson in loyality (he was a nobody before Clayton sniffed him out with spec pick). We need don't need to be giving the Suns a leg up by getting game time and experience into him.

Ridiculous and spiteful attitude! No way would we not play Harbrow if we are serious about the flag!

As for the OP, I agree in theory with the points you make but i guess losing a young gun who potentially could well be a top 5 player in the comp doesnt sit well with me
