Player Watch Harry DeMattia

this is exactly right.

at the ground, it was noticeable how much instruction Chucky Dean was giving to both DeMattia and Ryan in terms of where to stand / position, as part of the back 6 and especially when setting our defensive zone ..high'ish press to mid bloc

on the other hand, both seem less than instinctive footballers ..albeit early days esp for HDM
It’s concerning that Ryan is relying on Dean for system positioning at this point. He should be pretty well drilled by now, at least Harry has an excuse.

he (Ryan) needs to massively improve his contested work and 1v1 competitiveness ..lacks physicality and seems to plod around a fair bit, for mine.

Ryan was taken pick #28 (2022 draft) v Lachie Cowan (pick #30, 2022 draft). they both play the same position, HBF.

go and watch the highlights of Cowan's senior game vs Pies a couple of weeks ago ..super competitive, strong & hard at the ball. couldn't work out why Dekka picked up Ryan instead of Cowan .. would be nice to start seeing JR display some competitiveness at vfl level.

contracted til 2026 so still has time

That's a strange excuse since every other kid in the VFL has that same situation, and half the VFL boys are part timers who swap between VFL and other leagues every 2nd week.

Don't think that's an excuse. You need actual game time to practice the systems, therefore making it an easier step up when he gets a senior call up. Exceptions to the rule are Naicos and Harley Reid , where they are good enough to learn from game 1. Would be other first year players too , but if we are cutting players and putting a cross through their name 9 weeks in , we have recruited pretty poorly or , people think they know more than the club.

Bloke called Joe Richard’s was written off by many (me included) he’s going alright now. And he’s not a kid.

Our draft hauls outside of daicos have been at best late teens picks. Highly unlikely any are going to have early impact, otherwise they would have been taken much earlier in the draft

Yep, this. It’s not just the exposure he has missed in games, he was also unable to participate in any match simulation at training during his injury rehab.

Murphy and Moore spent most of last year pointing at each other or anyone else who got close enough to them.

Frampton has said that on playing seniors in defence, he hasn’t needed to think because he just goes where he’s told by Moore and Howe.
