Your “good core” see’s you in 17th place, only percentage above WC who have 26 fit players available.
F/S McCabe will still have to be paid for with draft picks wherever he’s drafted.
To bring in pick 18 (Weddle) last year the hawks traded pick 27 and their second and third rounders this year !!
There’s no freebies in this caper, use your single first rounder wisely …

It’s Geelong you are thinking of, just the first round pick

It won’t be pick 1, but hawks will take their solitary first rounder to the draft … like most other clubs, and they may or may not find a good prospect … like most other clubs.
With only a single first rounder … like most other clubs already above them, how do the hawks climb past all these clubs who are also trying just as hard to improve each season ?
Other clubs in this type of rebuild can attest to how difficult the task is, even armed with multiple first round picks let alone just the mandatory one …
Buckle up hawks fans …
The most obvious answer is natural progression, as clubs have players enter their twilight of their careers and or retire, we won't have a similar issue with instead the core of the list approaching it's prime years. This will see the club move up the ladder to what point that is yet to be determined.

Yes. It’s working with the demographic cycle rather than against it. We did recruit youngsters but when the team is contesting, there’s very little opportunity for them to get experienced, which is the main thing the team is short on right now.

The squad is only slightly younger than our squad in 2008, and that squad was only slightly younger than Geelong 2008

+McCabe who is shooting up the draft boards

Wouldn't be surprised if we package up this years second and next years to try and get ahead of a bid

Our good core is the youngest in the comp by almost a full year on average.

Our midfield has been one of the best in the comp so far, we’ve seen a lot of talent all over the field from forward to midfield to defense, and Box Hill are doing really well with plenty of young talent dominating games.

We get two firsts and a 2nd this year ontop of two firsts and a 2nd last year.

Never been the most prolific of posters, Strapping Young Lad.

But as you've asked; I support a team that tries to win games of football - so no complaints from me!

Do you think Geelongs season started at half time on Easter Monday? Is that when you first tuned in?

They most certainly are, but Hawthorn have gotten better also.
That doesn't make my statement untrue. Hawthorn can have gotten better and still be behind the 8 ball.

Any club that avoids being last this year will do so due to the Eagles and North being super super bad.

Hence a team that is 1-6 with a percentage of 65 isn't in contention for last place, even though most other years they would be.

Hawks 15th from 16 with 70% in 2004. 15th from 16 in 1997 87%. As people sad, often thers someone worse

Btw prelim 2001, premiership 2008

Um. Cool?

I'm just pointing out Hawthorn aren't contending for the spoon.

Still got another 2nd rounder this year

Try again

Not hawthorns natural second rounder which at this stage is a juicy pick 20 ?
The second rounder the hawks hold is i believe tied to Footscray ? who have won their last 2 games and now sit on the edge of the 8 on percentage.
If/when Footscray enter the eight, lowering the value of the pick, and McCabe rises, the second rounder the hawks hold may well fall later than a McCabe bid, thus denying the hawks a second player before the held second rounder would have been used.

BTW … how did the hawks come by the dogs second rounder ?
Tied up somehow in the shipping off of Mitchell and O’Meara who hawthorn are still paying to play for other clubs ?

Now bear with me, there is this pretty crazy thing before the draft called the trade period. Last year over 60 picks were traded in the trade period and draft night itself. We went into the draft last year with one first rounder, came out with 2.
You'll find that most clubs with a clear academy/FS prospect will do a fair bit of maneuvering in the trade period to get either the picks required or a pick before where that player is expected to go.

Quite happy to be paying for Mitchell and Omeara as well considering our midfield is infinitely better without them and with such a young list we do have to reach the AFL's cap min

No doubt hawthorn will be doing their best during the trade period … just like every other club will be.

It’s noted in an above post how the hawks acquired pick 18 (Weddle) in exchange for pick 27 and this year’s second and third rounders (currently picks 20 & 38 ?) in a reported super draft. Time will tell if that was good business.

Atm, besides their natural first rounder, I believe the hawks hold a second and third rounder both tied to Footscray ?
Keen to know how those 2 picks can yield a pick before where McCabe is expected to be bid on without dipping heavily into 2024 Capital as well as bleeding any remaining 2023 capital ?

Robbing Peter to pay Paul has to catch up to you in the end …

Let's say McCabe goes pick 10, we'd only need a 2nd and 3rd to get him with the 25% discount. A third itself is easy enough to acquire without spending much. It could very well be our 3rd in 2024 for a 3rd in 2023 that gets the deal done.

That means we get 2 top 10 picks this year for the price of a second rounder and whichever end of the round each 3rd goes. I'd do that every day of the week to get 2 top 10 picks.

That's if McCabe even goes top 10, every chance he doesn't until we get a clearer picture at the champs.

Our midfield has been one of the best in the comp so far,

surprise wtf GIF

Strange things happen draft night, teams get desperate for players and picks

Cough. Stocker.... Cough.

But that single stat doesn't mean that Hawks have the best midfield in the comp, or even close to it.
“One of” our midfielders in terms of contested footy & clearances, the latter especially have been very good, we were 1st and are top 4 for clearance differential.

And?

I think you're missing a couple of elements that would make Hawthorn's midfield one of the best in the competition
