Next year isn't dubbed a super draft just because of the talls either.

In fact it's the broad range of different type players that people are calling it that.

I don't necessarily think someone like Duursma as an example is/will any better than Humphrey, Rachele, Hollands or Hayden Young as an example.

The discussion was surrounding the talls and the discussion vs next year. The original poster was correct in stating that 12 months ago, the 2022 draft was described as a a great draft specifically for talls.
It was not being called a super draft for talls, which is what the original poster claimed.

You are getting into semantics now.
No, I’m not getting into semantics, I’m making the same point I always was.

This 2022 draft was never dubbed a “super draft for talls”.

Right, let us rephrase then...

The 2022 draft was described as an exceptional draft for talls this time last year.

Happy?
No, I’m not happy because you’ve been arguing for the sake of arguing.
My original post said exactly what I have continually said and it’s still correct. No one ever dubbed the 2022 draft as a super draft for talls.

Was it though? I think it was just said that there were a lot more talls in this draft than the previous one, but as it turned out there were less than anticipated. Not sure anyone ever called it a super draft for talls.

That trend exists because clubs are more particular about talent acquisition. One small deficiency is enough to see an 18 year old passed over. I personally don't believe clubs were as pedantic a decade ago. Plus we have the SSP period and mid season rookie draft. Add all the kids taken in the latter and you're above 70 new faces.

We've also now had 2019, 20, 21 and 22 we're we've turned over the list heavily. The planning from Sam Mitchell and Mark McKenzie is that next year is our final year of hitting the draft hard before we start to attempt topping up with mature free agents. The club believes 2024 onwards is the true start of our window.

Something has gone drastically wrong if the 'rebuild' is still happening in 2027.
If the hawks and their supporters believe that they only need one more year at the draft before topping up then they’re even more delusional than I thought

Mate, our team for next year is looking that good we couldn't even see room for Jom and TMitch.
I agree re. the delusional part - I don't see us needing another year at all. We're in the premiership window RIGHT NOW baby!

Can you please tell Sam Mitchell for us. I'm sure he'll be disappointed to hear that.

Alternatively, you could use some independent thought and consider list management and timelines.

They had a plan to take multiple first round picks and/or upward of 9 top 30 selections over a three year period. We have one year left to run on that plan. It's all contingent on the development of the young players already on the list, which has been strong. Majority of our B&F top 10 were 24 years old or younger. We also won an extra game in 2022 compared to 2021.

After one more year of maximising our draft hand, we'll then hopefully be in a position to offer up future high draft picks to acquire elite talent from other clubs. That planning will probably also rely on another solid year of youth development in 2023.

It's delusional to believe this rebuild is in its infancy. It goes back to Will Day and Finn Maginness in 2019.

It’s a Good move for the Hawks IMO , if your bad be very bad and get as much talent in as quick as possible

Ballsy by Mitchell though , 2023 will be fine but the heat will be on to show meaningful improvement in 2024 because that is just the way footy is … and it’s a lot of rolls of the dice that have to come up winners

7-8 years out of finals tests the patience of any club regardless of how much respect the coach has

Spurs in the NBA doing the same thing for Victor Wemlandlasiadasdwdnyaba, seems to be only clubs with winning cultures that acknowledge it.
There's some symbolism about it, letting a bunch of youngsters know that it's not their time now, but you'll develop them and it will be one day.
At least they have a direction. Essendon fans have had the illusion that we might win a final every year for the last 10, but we've been accidentally tanking.

You’re right, the HFC are delusional, as if they’d know what the make up of a flag challenging side would look like.

I’ve only seen 10 premeirships in my lifetime so my faith is clearly misguided, I should listen to Freo fans with 2013 PTSD instead. 😂

Hawk fans getting their feathers a tad ruffled here, but in fairness, their footy club has been written off and dismissed more times in the past, especially over the last 20 years, than Australia's had Prime Ministers

At first glance, I don't think the Hawks had a particularly good draft and trade period, but they have proven me wrong before.

Going to be very interesting to see how they go in 2023, I think they will struggle for the first 4-6 weeks thsn gradually get better as the season gets on.

An 8 win season for them would be a good result

David Noble. There’s your problem, the bloke couldn’t coach. You’re forgetting North got in that mess because they hired a young coach and then let him fall into a whole with no support until he was that mentally slammed that he had to quit.

All of North’s woes have zero relevance to Hawthorn.
Late, late bump. But from what he did with the Swans reserves, and how highly he's rated by Gold Coast now, this was such a massive bummer too.

Seemed like a great man to have leading such a young and inexperienced side.

Based on their list, I'm not sure they'd be tracking much better - but it'd be interesting to see where North were at now if the support network had been there for Shaw.

Sunday afternoon at Norwood oval against the giants …

Destination club 👍
After playing Easter Monday and of all the games on Sunday this is the FTA game. Clearly still the team people want to watch

They aren't tanking in the traditional sense. They will try and win every game, but clearly they have gutted their list to the extent that they won't be competitive for a few years yet. North did a similar thing. It may work, but the AFL will hate it.

The Hawthorn review may provide some convenient options for the AFL to avoid this situation. As an example, rather than penalise Hawthorn draft picks the AFL could let them keep their picks but ban them from the early rounds of the next few drafts. That way they are forced to trade for established players or lose their picks. This would immediately improve Hawthorn's short-term performance and make their games more profitable for the AFL. It would be similar to the conditioned compensation picks North received this year.

Picks will not be lost in this review

It will be a fine at most, AFL want this under the rug, any performance related penalties will be detrimental to what the AFL want

For this to go away
