Look, I can admit that DGB has not come along as we'd hoped yet. There is still time but it is disappointing with a pick 6, especially one that fills a current need on the list.

However, no team nails every draft pick. And to be successful (win a flag), you don't need to. Hell, even the Hawthorn threepeat team has its share of high draft pick misses.

The key to being successful at the draft is to get more right than you don't (and to do so more often than your direct competitors). On those fronts, I think we are tracking ok, particularly with the value we have gotten from late and mid season picks.

The other potential problem is missing on a top draft pick is whether it is reflective of a talent identification issue. But everyone in the industry (and basically every club recruiter) were unanimous that there were a standout 6 that year and we picked DGB with the 6th selection (having bid on Campbell). Not to mention, that the draft in general has turned out to be relatively weak (makes sense with COVID) and thjat that Hawthorn came away with some pf the better prospects regardless,
Nvm all that. How’s Dingley going?

Never seen a group of fans so happy about coming 16th.
Apparently we were tanking and going to go through the season winless. Any improvement of that is a positive to be celebrated

We look at north and wce and say “At least we aren’t those dumpster fires”
Some weeks we look like North (WC are even way below North's level) but there are enough good weeks to be positive about how we look going forward.
5 wins and losses by 1, 2 and 3 points. Win those and we are on the fringes of competing for the 8.
There have been 8 absolute shockers thrown in though, need to fix that next season so that we are competitive in more games

Could easily have another 4 wins on the board and be sitting in 12th, with 3 games lost by a total margin of 6pts and they way we coughed up late chances against the Giants.

And don’t get me started on how transformed our midfield is for the future in just over half a season.

It's quite extraordinary how we've gone from a team who couldn't win a centre clearance to now a team that dominates them. Still have a ways to go but we've made damn good progress in a very short amount of time and really the main reason for it was moving on the old one dimensional players in Mitchell + O'Meara.

It took some big gorilla sized balls for Sammy and Co to take that risk and dare I say if Mitch Lewis doesn't miss the first quarter of the season combined with the 4 close losses we let slip we could've very well been in the 8. Looking back on things now it is quite obvious that we really wanted Gunners to stay and be that second target up front to support Lewis.

Whilst I wholeheartedly agree with the transformation of our midfield and the general direction of the club, I'm not sure having Mitch Lewis at the start of the year would really have seen us in contention for the 8.

We've still been atrocious and completely belted 8 times this year, with some of the worst halves of footy you'll see. Even with Mitch, we've copped some hidings. We are a 5 win team in 17th and whilst we've been 'unlucky' a few times (and 'lucky' once), we're still a fair way off.

Certinaly pleased we have a clear plan and many of the pieces are coming together - just that a fair few things have to improve by a fair bit for us to genuinely be in finals contention.

Agree with most of this, except for Tom Mitchell being one-dimensional. He's one of those guys who because he is so good, feels the need to do it all which having an inexperienced midfield around him meant he actually needed to. Now that he's gone our guys are growing with all that extra responsibility, but in his case at Collingwood he's doing the role he is the best in the competition at, extracting the footy and using his elite distribution skills to give it to the outside players. When he was with us he had to do that and then also play outside (due to a thin midfield) by running forward and being part of the chain; his kicking into F50 when he did this is not a strength, and it hurt us. Shedding a dimension or two from his game actually makes him a better player.

Mitchell is not the same player after his injury. He was the best player in the comp before he got injured.

He's not as you say the best extractor in the comp, he doesn't even rank in the top 30 clearances. He's not even the best at his club, De Goey and Daicos are better.

Worpel is ahead of Mitchell and is ranked 13th in the league for clearances, 7th for centre clearances. Worpel has even hit the scoreboard recently and his disposal and decision making has improved dramatically in the last couple of months. I'm sure Collingwood would swap Mitchell for Worpel in a heartbeat if they could.

Then why the need for hawthorn to pump over 100 million into an old tip site ?
SYL has correctly pointed out that this thread isn’t about Carlton … or any other club.
There’s more than enough to discuss here relating to the hawks rebuild …
Worst comes to worst Hawthorn sell the land for ten of millions in profit.

Being an old tip site, who knows whether there are any EPA issues involved that might impact the value of the land.
Reportedly, the project doesn’t even have a manager at this stage.
There are lots of questions and not many answers …
By the clubs own admission, the facilities at Waverley are substandard which makes it harder to be that “destination club” in trying to attract quality players and staff.
Testing times for the hawks to be sure …

We’re all so worried. 😂
