Hawthorn to play finals in 2024?

You’ve always been very realistic when it comes to the Hawks. And you’ve been spot on time and time again.

I will be right behind you when you say the rebuild is complete and the Hawks will make finals. But it ain’t gonna happen this year.

Earliest we will be playing finals is 2026.

Other than North Melbourne our backline is the worst in the AFL. Our two key position defenders are Sam Frost and Ethan Phillips! Jack Scrimshaw is being forced to play key position and he can’t defend. Our only quality small defender is Blake Hardwick and he’s been played as a small forward despite us trading for Jack Ginnivan and drafting Nick Watson…it’s actually laughable. Will McCabe is 2 years off playing at AFL level. Grainger-Barras will be lucky to be on the list next season and James Blanck has just done his ACL.

Without Will Day, our midfield is predictable. Slow and poor disposal. Newcombe is a star and that’s where it ends. Until Nash and Worpel are moved on, we won’t play finals. Mackenzie and Hustwaite look the goods but they are not fit enough yet. Josh ward who was drafted as a midfielder is being played as a wingman…he shouldn’t be in the side if he’s not played as a midfielder. Connor macdonald should be played in the midfield but gets stuck forward.

No team has worse ruck depth than us. Ned reeves, whilst he wins hit outs (hard not to when you’re 7 foot tall) is the worst ruckman around the ground in the league. We play with one less player after every centre bounce. Lloyd meek will likely request a trade at the end of the season after a full season at VFL level.

The forward line whilst has ok names on paper is a structural mess. Tonight we saw why Mabior Chol is at his third club. Uncompetitive and poor body language. Mitch Lewis has had an awful pre season and will take time to gel with Chol. Poor Nick watson is going to cop it all season…it won’t be his fault. Playing small forward for a bottom 3 side would be impossible. Jack Ginnivan at least looks the goods and will be a quality player for us. Hopefully Dylan moore returns in the opening few rounds.

Our list still has huge holes to fill before we look like making finals again. Our supporters that think we are even a remote chance at making finals this season or next are delusional.

Quoted for reality 👍

Suprised suckling wasnt pushed up the ground if he was a bad 1 on 1 defender.

If his left foot is good for kicking, why not put him on a wing or even on a forward flank to kick goals?
Suckling actually was pushed up the ground frequently; he was just competing at times for a wing position with Smith, Ellis, Young, and Hill (all much better gut runners and all much better in midfield traffic). Suckling’s big strength being his kick; thing is Smith and Young had monstrous boots, too (though less laser-like, they could do it at full tilt run and weren’t one-trick ponies).

Also, the team was struggling to fit Gunston into that forward at one point by memory (before Buddy moved on), so it would have been out of Suckling and him, really - except Gunston is taller and a much better gut-runner - even though Gunston can’t kick as far as Suckling, his goal-kicking at the time was arguably more accurate. That, and Suckling really didn’t do well with hard tags or close checking (got better at it with age, but younger Suckling could get caught in a tackle winding up for his kick quite a bit).

Just a matter of that team having ridiculous depth when you think about it, honestly.

Pipe dream at this stage. The club will continue to roll out the company line in public, saying we're not putting limits on ourselves etc, but behind closed doors they'll be realistic about where we're at.

We needed everything to go right, but too much has gone wrong already, and the season hasn't even started.

I'll be happy with an improvement, 8-10 wins, and I still think we can get there next year.

Defence very worrying.
Forwards all want to kick goals but 0 effort defensively.
Worpel, Nash, Ward running through the midfield, not scaring anybody.

Any more Hawkies want to take my line of <7 wins? Or has reality set in?

Nash and Worpel were poor on Saturday night.

They get a pass after their form for 23 rounds last season however.

Nash in particular was scaring plenty of opposition midfielders.

Hawthorn will finish above Carlton in 2024. Take it to the bank!

Reckon you will be paying the bank.

Don't think Hawks can get close to the Blue's worst possible year.

Walsh is the worry for Carlton. Don't think they are anywhere near the same side if he isn't fit and back issues can be tricky to fix.

For us, I still think if it all goes well from here we can get to 10 wins and if Walsh and few other injuries occur I can see Carlton dropping below that. They were 4-1-8 before they went on their run last year so they are certainly capable of dropping away

Still probably only 10-20% chance of it happening

Maybe preface it by saying “the worst key defenders in the league”

Sheezel, McKercher, Fisher and Goater sure as shit aren’t close to the worst group of mediums going around.

Which sides are they better than?

I suspect most neutrals would take Option 1 over Option 2:

Option 1
Harry Sheezel
Zac Fisher
Colby McKercher
Josh Goater

Option 2
Jarman Impey
Jack Scrimshaw
Ethan Phillips
Massimo D'Ambrosio

Carlton won the same number of games last year without Walsh, than Hawthorn won for the entire season.

We’d obviously love him out there, but it’s a fallacy to suggest we’re no good without him.
