Thats because backgammon has been overrun by Victorians who in the previous suburban state backgammon competition continued to run the national backgammon competition as if it was their own. No credit has ever been given to the great backgammon players of yesteryear unless they were Victorian.

Dill Boig won five straight WABL titles - an Australian backgammon league record. But will be ever be a legend of the board game? NO.
Farmer Ken played for 10 straight years in SA winning 7 titles - but he is not considered as worthy as Lony Tockett because he is not a VICTORIAN.
And Wos Filliams - the greatest backgammon player of them all - don't start me!!!!!
