Port Adelaide Football Club. One of the most successful and proud Australian football clubs of all time. Amongst its most successful reigns, the club has endured financial woes, on-field anguishes, a number of guernsey changes, a team-split, a new mascot, and more. Our culture and our heritage have, in the past, defined who we were, but who we are now? We have seen countless losses over the last few seasons, and none of them in the Port Adelaide spirit. They were spineless and gutless, to say the least.
After small losses, one of the main excuses for a loss is that our list is young, and that we’re rebuilding. There are many holes in that argument, and that is not to mention the fact that it’s an acceptance of mediocrity. In the hay days of any of our successful eras, any loss would be questioned. On the back of big losses, the most passionate of supporters will be in absolute shambles, disgusting by the effort that was dished up by their club. Some supporters even write poems to vent their frustration. But there is one thing for all to see, and that is that there is shame to be felt.
What was once a proud club has turned into nothing more than a shameful laughing stock. How did this happen? Why is it happening? Who is responsible for slaughtering all of our morals, merits, and beliefs as a footy club? Is there anything that we can we do as supporters to improve our on-field, and off-field, performances?
There is no quick-fix solution. Sack the coach? Could work, but would take time, and could make matters worse if we were to hire another bad one. Delist dud players? We shouldn’t have to come to this, we should be able to field at least 20 AFL-standard players each week. There’s not necessarily an issue with the players themselves, but the sheer number of hacks points to development and possibly recruitment issues. Sack the board? I like that idea, but who would seriously want to replace them?
It has been going on for far too long now. Ever since that day in '07. Where on Earth do we go from here...?
