Newscorp article so could be exaggerated but this was the worry with lockdowns and how little thought was given to the mental health impact

This is the 6 months that they were back at school. Probably just the lag from people who were already borderline, but got the break from school they needed. High Schools are way worse for mental health than home schooling! This data just confirms it.

Very good idea i still stand with my idea if you wish to come back, you have to agree to be vaccinated whilst in quarantine, if that means 3 weeks in quarantine so be it, if you are desperate to come back you will accept this no questions asked, if not stay where you are.

I think they should at least have their fist jab 2 weeks before they even board the plane home. (Entirely possible in most parts of the world).

I also agree that it appears the two weeks incubation might be stretching and adding a couple of days might be worth doing. Might be to do with the Delta Variant too, that the assumed 14 day incubation period is no longer valid.

Or kids who were coping in years prior, got 4 months in effective isolation and then found what they could cope with before was all too much for them now

I know a few adults who didn't want to face people after the lockdown, it would have been much worse for kids when they were forced to go back into the classroom

This is very true, I think with mental health, it's so many contributing factors, it's never easy to know.

Also, the article isn't clear about what the increase is compared to. If it's compared to 2020 when the lockdown saw a drop, that's not a great comparison.

There's another statistic they compare to 2019 figures.

The statistics in this article are so all over the place you can't put a finger on whether the data is supporting their contention. Typical Newscorp.

Has there been any mention of interstate travel restrictions lifting? I know it's partly dependent upon the other states but also on Victoria allowing people to go, surely?

I think it depends on the state mate, i have trip planned to Howlong Golf resort on the 25th this month, it's just over the border but i'm waiting on what NSW say and the travel limit reduced before i know if i can go.

i may be wrong, but vic never stopped regional vic people going interstate, it was the other states (understandably)

I understand the argument but there is very little room for moderates in political parties these days. Not sure these parliamentarians are suffering a huge opportunity cost being paid $200K as a backbencher.

Ideology Is becoming increasingly important and is narrowing (so much for the broad church) so I expect we’d just end up paying a similar group of people more money.

Hillsong is not a very "broad church"

For the week that the entire state was locked down, a Victorian travelling interstate would have been a breach of the public health directions (non-Victorians were still permitted to leave the state to return home). Since last Friday, people in regional Vic have been free to leave the state, they are just not able to enter anywhere except NSW (and in NSW, they would be subject to a stay at home direction).

How's putting pressure on about gyms by this journo? A bit ridiculous, surely the last places to re-open.

Who's the idiot asking about what transmissions didn't happen.

Well Brad since you asked, I think that it's bullshit that they the don't open gyms up. Yes I understand that these places are much more populous to germs, but there are way more avenues to combat them like sanitary wipes, sprays, and much better hygiene facilities than in pubs or in PT. Plus gyms are not only good for physical development but also emotional, psychological and social development. How do you think I have kept those dark thoughts at bay?

How come it's apparently healthier to go and get wasted in a pub but its forbidden to get fit in the gym? Where is the bogus "health advice" on that? Why is it OK to have pint of beer in each hand but not OK for those hands to be filled with a dumbbell? Why is OK for me and 20 of my mates to go to a pub to crowd around a table, but not OK for us to go to a gym where we're spread out? Where is the phoney "health advice " on that?

The flip side is the mental health impart of a large Covid outbreak where thousands of people die. NYC for example have had huge issues.

Opening up does not eliminate mental health concerns and probably makes them much worse if the outbreak gets out of control.

Absolutely agree on a large outbreak. The issue I have is where the goal is always getting back to 0 with little regard to anything else

Yep, you need to cross sectional study looking at the mental health outcomes comparing many jurisdictions looking at different public health responses, severity of the outbreaks and the economic fallout.
