There is nothing more depressing than seeing half the stadium empty during an AFL game. I have an idea that will improve the attendance numbers: Free entry for the public after half time. Even though they are not going to generate extra revenue, the bigger crowds will generate a better atmosphere for the game. I remember they did something similar with the cricket back in the day. Free entry for last half hour of play.

Pretty sure this is the case late in games, if you stroll to the MCG or Etihad in the 4th they really don't care. Problem is knowing exactly when this is and (for many) living close enough to justify going for that small part of the game.

The best idea is supply-demand. Like the NFL with only 16 regular season schedule, when there's less events on offer, fans will flock more to the games.

So, the AFL should emulate the NFL here too -- like they already do on a yearly basis with almost everything else.

18 teams....just a quick idea would be 17 games, one against each team. Every two years you end up playing every team home and away. Seems most equatable system. Tho you could do other ideas like splitting teams into temporary conferences based on previous year's ranking, split into odds and evens. You play each team in your conference twice = 16 games. Then top 4 teams from each conference advance to playoffs.

Anyway, to answer your question.....supply-demand. Might get fewer total audience, but a higher average crowd.

Too many teams, talent spread too thin makes for some very average games and a lot of supporters I think are getting disillusioned with the prospect of possibly never seeing their teams be successful. Less teams would make both the AFL and State leagues stronger. More isn't always better.

Public executions pre-game.

I think it's Iran that does them in footy stadiums. People turn up in their droves and they don't even get a footy match afterwards.

Imagine how many we'd get by throwing in a complimentary game after.

Instead of beer and jam donut stalls the could have armouries where the fans could arm themselves and participate.

You know it makes sense AFL, make it happen.

Good post, I think the overall quality needs to improve also there is an over supply in games

While you sit at home, not at the game, watching on TV...
I would go to Collingwood games if I can, but why would I pay to watch Melbourne Vs GWS? But if I was in the city in the vicinity of MCG or Docklands around half time mark, I might wander in if it was for free.

Not sure why there'd be any expectation on you to attend if you're not a supporter of one of the clubs playing. And if the league is relying on "neutrals" for a significant portion of crowd numbers (which they're not), then they're probably a league in trouble.

Totally agree. Too many teams.

Better seating management would help, too many reserved areas where only a few a few dozen have bought tickets. Happens in the finals a lot too

Agree, it's just too hard to climb back up with two extra spots, as well as the draft concessions and funding to GC and GWS, especially for teams like St.Kilda and Brisbane who hit some sort of a peak just before the expansion began. I'm a member who attends not for the spectacle but to support my team, the standard of footy played by bottom sides isn't worth the price of admission for the average person.
