U.S. citizens should consider leaving Russia immediately on commercial flights, the State Department said on Sunday, citing an increasing number of airlines canceling flights and countries closing their airspace to Russia after its invasion of Ukraine.

"U.S. citizens should consider departing Russia immediately via commercial options still available," said a security alert dated Feb. 27 on the web site of U.S. embassy in Moscow.

It has asked U.S. citizens to have "a contingency plan that does not rely on U.S. government assistance."

Putin is rattling the nuclear cage in an effort to get the West to back off. It is a clear sign that the mid strength sanctions imposed on his rich mates has already had some effect. Putin is hardly likely to use nuclear weapons on his own doorstep. Then again any sane person would baulk at nuclear warfare but as each day passes I see the signs of megalomania creeping into Putin's actions. I just hope there are enough sane people around Putin to stop him pushing buttons.
