iPhone equivalent

OK, I want a new phone and I like the idea of the iPhone. However I find them pretentious, too common, too cliche and too expensive. Is there a similar sort of thing available at a more reasonable price with similar features?

Advise me.

I signed up on an iphone 3gs plan, go it on Three, they unlocked it for free and I sold it for a tad under 800 bucks. I then imported the one above for a bit over 600. It will be a pain if it ever breaks, but hopefully that wont happen.

I LOVE this phone. Does everything the iphone does. But isn't an iphone. It runs the android operating system. It is completely customisable. So you can instal hacked operating systems, change all the themes, EVERYTHING is customisable. Only issue I have found so far is that it can't connect to a wifi network with a proxy (ie, uni). Apart from that, its perfect. It also has a huge app store which is only going to get better.

However, if you can hold out a bit longer, the buzz on alot of forums is the next generation of smartphones should be coming first quater next yeart. Sony Ericsson have an announcement coming in the next couple of days which could be quite interesting. Currently the Hero and the iphone and any other android device have a processor speed ~ 528 MHz. This new phone by SE has a 1GHz snapdragon processor in it. This is a big deal because the phone will be ridiculously quicker and will therefore be able to run much more complicated applications. Only time will tell what savy developers will be able to do with this new hardware.

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum/123 is where I found heaps of information and subsequently decided on the Hero.

If you're interested in the HTC Hero, feel free to ask me any questions.

Hope that helps.

:)
