Know, first things first, lets try and keep Oasis discussion out of this thread, we have our own thread for album talk, tour dates, the width of Noel's eyebrows, etc, etc.

Now, one city in England has produced an amazing amount of successful bands, now, you may not like some of these bands, but they have all had success and the music has been good enough to appeal to a wide range of people and break into several countries.

Here is a list of bands to come out of Manchester.

Joy Division/New Order
Oasis
The Verve
The Stone Roses
The Chemical Brothers
The Smiths
Happy Mondays

That is quite a roll call, so i challenge anyone to come up with a better list from a different city, hopefully we can get some ripper lists.

surely New York must be up there?Without even bothering to look it up, the yeah yeah yeahs, the strokes, interpol, beastie boys, the fiery furnaces, sinatra, sonic youth.....

London or New York.

Off the top of my head London has got:
The Rolling Stones
The Who
The Kinks
The Clash
The Sex Pistols
David Bowie
Eric Clapton
Elton John
Iron Maiden
The Jam
Rod Stewart
Queen

They're all B Grade bands.

London easily. New York and LA would be up there.

Thats a joke right. You embarrased yourself enough in The Smiths thread, so just tone it down a bit.

Add The Buzzcocks to that list aswell. Manchester has produced many great bands. Liverpool would is also right up there.

It's certainly fair to say that London is a better off city, and these bands would have access to more resources. Manchester however is a very difficult city to live in where crime, drugs and violence are common.

Actually numb nut, you're the one embarassing yourself trying to say those Mank bands are greater than the London bands. Seems you have a problem separating your personal taste from community taste.

If you had said "I like Mank bands better" then there is no problem, but you are trying to say those Mank bands as a group are greater than their London counterparts. This is simpy not true. You are either delusional, a twat, or I suspect, both.

Have got to admit that is pretty damn good list, but London is such a massive city.

IMO, it'd be Los Angeles, New York, Seattle and London. Manchester still has a good list, but most of those bands listed are not my cup of tea.

I don't remember saying that Manchester has produced better bands than London. The only twat/deluded one is you. You said those bands are B-graders simply because you don't like them. I remember that stupid Smiths thread, and a couple of Oasis threads.

And yes, London has produced better bands, but the resources available there far outweigh manchesters by a very long way. Which brings me to the conclusion that Manchester bands use minimal resources very well. Like sydney, they don't have much, but they use what they can.

Add Coldplay to the list.

Manchester has had only two good bands: The Verve and The Smiths. The rest are actually b-grade.

Seattle ain't bad.

Alice in Chains
Ben Harper
Jimi Hendrix
Mother Love Bone
Mudhoney
Nirvana
Pearl Jam
The Presidents of the United States of America :p
Queensryche
Screaming Trees
Soundgarden

But London and New York would have them both covered.

Add to that Death Cab for Cutie (well close enough to), The Postal Service, Pretty Girls Make Graves, all be it not big bands, still quite popular of the last 10 or so years.

Manchester is quite a big city as it is anyway. isn't the metropolitan area in the region of 4.5 million or something. Really they should be putting in more of an effort if thats all the decent bands they can pump out.

Liverpool> Manchester.

Liverpool > Manchester

The Beatles
Gerry and the Pacemakers
The Yardbirds
The Searchers
The Zombies
Frankie goes to Hollywood
Echo and the Bunnymen
Elvis Costello

Some all time greats there

Yardbirds formed in London with London members except for McCarty.

The Zombies were from St Albans in Hertfordshire in the South East.
