List Mgmt. Ivan Soldo requests trade

His salary is way too high to be sharing ruck duties with Visentini in the SANFL.

Should have nothing to do with personal stuff. Trade him and rookie a ruck.

Yep, I dont have an issue with him leaving from a list point of view, better using the pick and dollars elsewhere now Sweet has shown he can lead the ruck and Vis has shown he's got someting to offer.

But I do have an issue in general with these insta-personalities and the newspapers (and particular journalists) that make it all about them. They seem to be 'dial a quotes'.

I supported getting both Soldo and Sweet in, because I thought Visentini was too raw.

But this year he's shown enough improvement to be a good enough No.2 option.
I'm not doubting Dante's talent there's just a difference between coming in for the odd game here and there as a young developing ruck opposed to coming in for 15 weeks if the number 1 ruck cops a serious injury.

We would never get much value in a trade for Soldo of we kept him as depth for the remainder of his contract.

Visentini being AFL ready has changed things.

I don't know how y'all are against this.

I suggested in July its something we should encourage... I find the article laughable though

I have no issue with soldo asking for a trade, but he’s contracted and we paid a price to bring him here, we are under no obligation to trade him unless the benefits (what we can get in return) outweigh the negatives (sweet getting comfortable and having a dip in form. Which is something port fans would be immensely thick to suggest can’t happen after watching lycett arrive with a bang to turn to villain pretty quickly.

We overpaid for him, that was one mistake, trading him for a 3rd rounder doesn’t change that mistake, it’s just adding a second mistake. Starting a collection of mistakes like it’s our hobby or something.

Sure , if we got a return that was worth it, i just think there’s a disparity between his trade value to clubs and what we should take that outweighs the risk of letting him go.

The saints pick 43 will become pick 47-50 after compo picks are added , on draft day after f/s ngas it’s likely to become much further out. It will become bidding points for Barrett probably.

Of course I think we will let him go, it’s what the club does.

The club didn't probably expect Sweet to be as good as he turned out (4th in the league for HOs), and that he and Soldo may have been fairly close in their ability, with perhaps injury/availability separating them.

Probably best he pursues opportunities elsewhere. The success of a ruckman is really luck and timing above all else.

Best for him, doesn’t mean best for us.

There needs to be a way to loan rucks in and out. It's such a specialist position and unless you're an All Australian level ruckman you could easily find yourself playing reserves for extended periods just depending on the form and availability of your competition at any given time.

Its always easy to be wise after the event but I'm not too sure the club did due diligence on Soldo and his knee(s) issues, particularly as playing in what is arguably the most physical role in a team had to at least suggest he would miss a number of games through injury.

Re trading him, I doubt we will get anything like our outlay back and the best result will be an early 3rd rounder, but hopefully whatever we get can be used to help facilitate a trade for one of the players the club is targeting.

At the time, I called for the trade to be way overs.

It was essentially two 2nd rounders for a 28 year old career backup with an injury history who has never played more than 14 games in a season.

I think we had to trade our 1st this year to get this and Esava over the line. Terrible.

In the end, I thought the overpayment was more based on poor development coaching and not having the right plan for our rucks so we have the bizarre off season of having to grab two ruckmen which would be highly unusual.

Luckily Sweet is working out.

Worrying about Sweet getting injured is a waste of time. Most clubs only have 1 back up and we have a good 1 in Dante. Also have Rategolea that could do it if desperate.

Just means we need to pick up another younger Ruck or a solid mature ager.

I know he's a bit small but Boyd be great mainly to be in the Magpies can play fwd too and be great leadership. Maybe Jack Hayes if he gets cut by saints

Unless you're Brodie Grundy, then it can be both.

We got very very lucky with this one. With everything we gave up (pick 41, 49 last year and 29 and 72 this year), we got back Soldo and pick 50. Pick 50 was then used on Sweet, who is now our #1 ruck.

There would be zero chance anyone could pickup Sweet for pick 50 now. Would cost a heap more as he has become a dominant #1 ruck within the first year of being traded here.

If anyone said to you right now would you trade 29, 41, 49 and 72 for Sweet alone, you would do it instantly. We will get something back from trading Soldo out again, so ultimately it is not bad business at all, just very lucky.

I'd be telling Soldo tough shit, unless we get what we gave back for you, you aren't going anywhere.

You're especially not going anywhere if we are paying even a cent of your wages.

Work your way back into the side!

There will be no tough stance we don't operate that way lol it'll be whatever helps us do other things or picks we may need for F/S or whatever. I'd be interested in finding another mature backup myself.

If Soldo leaves it won’t be because we don’t need him, we absolutely do.

It will be because he wants an easier path to being first choice.
