The word from the AFL integrity unit is a “small 50 doliar “ bet, so let’s take the Integrity units word for this, I’m sure the betting organisation will release all the details of the bet contrary to the privacy act in this country.

How about losing your license to run said agency.

They are obliged to release info which may relate to a criminal offence , this one doesn’t sound like it with the information fed to us.

We will never get the real story
I didn’t think the integrity unit had many any comment yet?

Yes, ST I am.

Given i see other professions making a living about backing themselves in every day i really dont see the difference in a footy player doing it.

As i said its different if he was betting against himself but if what hes alledged to have done is what he did then what us the problem?
Hypothetical: Stephenson and Melksham both put $50 on their own teams to win. They each know the other has done this.
Sportsbet pay out if your team is up by 24 points at any break. The 2 players could manipulate it that 1 team gets up by 24 points and the other wins the match so they both get paid.

It's hard to understand how someone who is/will be making $100,000s a year can still feel the need to risk their entire career for the sake of winning a couple hundred dollars on a bet.

All the talk will be about stupidity. It's degenerate gambler behaviour.

that is a pretty outrageous hypothetical situation...

Stephenson asked the friend to put on a bet, believed to be less than $50.
The second-year forward faces suspension and a possible fine as the matter sits before the AFL integrity unit.
Both the AFL and Collingwood refused to comment tonight.
It is believed the bet involved the performances of Collingwood teammates in a match.

It is believed the bet was placed on the Round 9 clash against St Kilda at the MCG which the Magpies won by 41 points.

On cue I asked a friend , it wasn’t me.......so did the friend dog him in, Jesus the AFL think we are all morons

The coverup has ramped up.

Did the friend tell his friendly online betting agency ..oh by the way my mate who is playing in the said game asked me to place a bet.

This is the AFL integrity unit making their statement , nothing to see here

I agree.

However, Some journo somewhere will report it like:

“The bet size, believed to be in the region of $20, is not the main focus on the enquiry. Rather, it is the line of betting on which this was placed that has deeply concerned officials”

The remainder, eager to not be seen behind the story, will run with whatever figure the first Journo put. Rightly or wrongly. The masses believe. Stephenson will cop his punishment, the world moves on.

Whether it’s the truth though, is another story. And only a few will be the wiser.

Shaw missed 8 games for a $10 bet. Could be set for a looong time out.
Context is key here.

Shaw had a flutter albeit a small one at Maxwell to kick the first goal with the inside knowledge that Maxwell was starting forward - a position he almost never played.

If Stephenson backed himself to boot the first goal which is what’s being suggested, then yes it’s an incredibly stupid thing to do, but he probably would have been one of hundreds to do so.

It’s the obscure, inside knowledge part that brought about such a harsh penalty for Heater. Stevo should cop a whack but I don’t think Heater’s penalty should be used as a yardstick.

The watering down has begun.

Why would a betting agency report to the afl an anonymous bet, from an anonymous friend ?

And why would Stephenson take the suspension if it happens if this was truly the case.

The afl are treating their supporters like morons

I’m saying they wouldn’t bother investigating minnow clubs like North or Tigers for rules infractions, wouldn’t sell papers. As if Collingwood players are the only ones dumb enough to bet on AFL.
Pie mafia strikes again.Beware .

The only reason essendon got rumbled was the pesky feds we’re investigating the bikers , even then it took an independent body to punish them .

There is more to this than the afl are divulging, they will try to water it down.

The Shaw thing was insider knowledge so was reported by the betting companies ie illegal

If the story is true then and that’s a big if why would they report it, if it wasn’t illegal they stand to lose their betting licence, as they are only permitted to divulge for illegal stuff

SunshineTiger set me right already i never considered that point but upon reflection i can see why its a big deal.

Betting agencies have agreements with sporting codes that allow them to access records involving people in the industry.
