If we’re comparing to the Tex situation, he was targeting an indigenous player with his abuse, whereas JF was using a slur unconnected to that person’s identity. I think it’s not as bad. But because it’s Port there will naturally be the inflated sense of it being “time to make an example”.
Who are you to assume what Matt Crouch identifies as?

The real potential issue is it infiltrating lower leagues and junior footy.

To put it simply, you don’t want gay kids not welcomed and not playing footy because they think people have deemed the footy field a safe space to call them **** ( or whatever was said).

What happens in the AFL does set the standards throughout the country to some extent.

4 weeks and 20,000 penalty.

You don’t think that this level of insult isn’t used in high schools all around the country in the same way TOJ used it last night?

Would you say it’s time to set an example?

The current timeline is stupid and should be called out as such, we have gone way too far and precious about everything. There are so many thing wrong with the world but as a society we seem to make way too much of nothing issues like this instead.
Agreed - you can't even call someone a homophobic or racial slur these days without the woke brigade getting up in arms

I don't support homophobic slurs but I don't believe in tarring someone for life. In this woke climate I feel it will probably ruin his rep in the eyes of many. Port and Collingwood for some reason often seem embroiled in those racist incidents, so doesn't really help their rep. I mean, footy culture is still quite different to the sanitised media PC world the AFL as an organisation inhabits.

Am curious as to what he said, annoying how they never reveal it.

I honestly don't get the big deal unless the player he said it to is gay. A bit embarrassed if we reported this. What next, mum jokes get investigated.
Similar to my little story, I separated from my wife of 34 years 6 years ago, I still see her regularly as we have children and grandchildren. Anyway I was talking to her not long after our split and she told me(not so subtly having a go at me) about her sister saying to her that I was probably gay so don't be so cut up about the breakup.

I just laughed and told her to relay to her sister that if that was supposed to be a slur I never realised she had such a low opinion of homosexuals.

I think there should be an AFL approved swear word that the players can use and not get in trouble for. The AFL should form a committee with representatives from minority groups to reach a consensus and then players can be educated to only use that word in future.

Can you use the AFL approved swear against umpires, or is that still penalised as dissent?

Despite what people will say, context actually matters in situations such as this.

Using it as an insult towards a straight person is completely different to doing it to a gay person.

It’s still not appropriate, but intent matters. Using a bad word doesn’t automatically = raging homophobe.

a lot of things said and done on the field aren't acceptable but occur with no dramas. Swearing for example, not great but would happen a thousand times a game.
Sure, but the line you don't cross any longer is stuff that's discriminatory against certain characteristics - i.e. skin colour, sexual orientation, religion, etc.

Swearing is in itself pretty neutral.
