Re: Improvement

has announced his retirement to the playing group
Sad if true, but it was always a risk when taking him on.

Re: Improvement

Heard that he had ankle soreness before a VFL game couple weeks ago so pulled out of that. Obviously the club arent going to risk him gaining a more serious injury so would make sure he's fully fit again before playing.
I would have thought most people would have reliased he was more a long term project then getting him back this year in the AFL.

Do a Gardy, write him off for this year (was unrealistic anyway), take it slow and prep him for next year. Might as well try, since we took him in the national draft we've got him for two years.

Yeah nah, won't be happening.

On a one-year deal, Smith won't be offered another contract. It's also unlikely that he will begin rehab this year.
"I would think so . . . it's going to be pretty hard for him from here on in," Saints football manager Greg Hutchison conceded yesterday.

"He gave himself the best opportunity.

"He's sort of relieved he went to another place and worked with a group of medical people to get another chance at it.

"It hasn't worked out for him. But he won't die wondering because he had another crack at it."

Oh wells, was worth the try anyway.

we've got him for two years.

Think the 2 years only applies for first time draftees.

Looks like its over for JWS, which is a shame as (from his VFL form) it looked promising and agree with Benchy - was certainly was worth a go in drafting him.

Gee's I hope Winmar works out, he's our now our most promising draftee from 2009 ( along with our promising rookie of course.

Bad luck for Smith, must be a bugger for these guys when they are at the edge of becoming a top competative sportsman, and then can't even play at a lower level because their body lets them down.

Jesse W Smith was taken with the knowledge that he was a high risk of never playing for us. The upside was determined to be so good that he was worth the risk. Sadly he did not recover to his nor the medicos satisfaction and he was forced to retire - his career over.

Another AFL dream extinguished. :(
